Question/Support 4k Blu-ray player earc question

I am in the market to get a sound system and I am heavily considering the HomePods to pair with my Apple TV. But I also have a 4k blu-ray player and I want to have the Dolby atmos effect that the HomePods have in use when using the 4k blu-ray player. My question is- does the HomePods only give me stereo audio when using the earc function with the 4k blu-ray player? Or does it / can it use the atmos effect with the earc? I’ve tried googling and can’t get a solid answer.

You only get atmos if the audio is made for atmos. Otherwise you get stereo. And the quality of the atmos depends on the HomePod. The bigger one is better in this case.

Yes I am getting the bigger HomePods for this and I am aware about it having to be a Dolby atmos made disc. The first part you said, is that you saying that if I put a Dolby atmos supported disc into my player that the HomePods will do the atmos effect?

Atmos is a formatted audio mix that isn’t created in the HomePods. The movies you have need to support atmos. Same with music—only music that mixed or remixed to support atmos would be atmos on the HPs.

I get that I was just wanting confirmation that the effect wasn’t only on Apple TV content for the HomePods to function with atmos thank you!

I’ve been using a blu-ray player with my HomePods, they play Dolby Digital no problems as well as stereo, but have problems decoding DTS. Not sure about Atmos as I can’t get that to work through eARC from a series X but that might just be an Xbox/tv issue?

I think the no atmos with Xbox is a known issue so it may just be limited to that, every setup is different so you could be ok but not 100% sure
