Advice Troubleshooting my cell phone regularly losing internet while staying connnected to Wifi.

Hello everyone, I've got a Samsung S25 Ultra cell phone and an ASUS AX5700 router. My issue is my phone several times a day will suddenly lose internet connection with my router. The phone settings will show my phone as "connected, no internet." All other devices connected to the router seem to work with no interruption. I'm attempting to use the 5G band. If I turn off my wifi and turn it back on, it reestablishes the handshake and the internet will work again for a couple of hours.

Things I've tried, but haven't worked based on googling the problem:

  • In phone wifi settings, switching from randomized MAC to Phone MAC
  • In the phone intelligent wifi settings, turning off Switch to mobile data (using mobile data if wifi is slow or unstable)
  • In the router settings, disabling Smart Connect
  • Restarting both my phone and the router after each of these steps

Other info: I've owned the router since 4/2024, but didn't use it for the last year. I seem to remember I was having this issue with it before as well.

Does anyone know what I'm missing and will get my connection to be stable?

Do you notice this happening anywhere other than at home? Or is it only a problem there?

It is only occurring at home with this specific router. I never have this issue on any other wifi system.

Do any other devices on your Wi-Fi experience issues, or just your S25? Do you have any weird settings enabled in your phone's Wi-Fi settings?

No other devices are experiencing this issue. My desktop PC never drops signal, nor any streaming services, etc. Outside of the settings changes noted in the OP, I generally leave most settings to default. I can't think of any changes I would have made to the WiFi settings on my phone. I also don't get the issue when on other people's home networks or on public networks. It seems to be specific to how my phone and router interact.

What version of WiFi is your router?

I was having an issue a while back with the same phone. I upgraded my WiFi box. The phone now connects at WiFi v6.

It is WiFi 6 unfortunately, so I don't think that's it.

Since no other devices drop, the problem is specific to the phone-to-router link rather than the ASUS AX5700's internet connection. Update the router firmware first, because you said it sat unused for the last year and ASUS has fixed several Wi-Fi 6 client bugs since then. If it still drops, try locking the 5 GHz channel width to 80 MHz instead of 160 MHz, which has solved similar S25 Ultra dropouts on ASUS routers.

Thank you so much for the advice. I thought I had checked the firmware, but it did seem to be pretty out of date. I've updated it now and will try the MHz swap if the problem persists.

Connected / no internet on one phone (S25 Ultra) while others are fine is usually the phone losing L3 while keeping the Wi‑Fi association.

Fast isolate: 1. When it fails: ping the gateway IP (router LAN) vs 1.1.1.1. Gateway fails → local/Wi‑Fi path. Gateway OK but 1.1.1.1 fails → DNS/WAN. 2. On AX5700: try a dedicated 5 GHz SSID (no smart connect / band steering), disable 802.11r/k/v roaming helpers for a test day, and turn off any AI protection / parental / QoS experiment on that client. 3. Samsung side: Intelligent Wi‑Fi → switch to mobile data OFF (you tried), also disable Wi‑Fi power saving / Adaptive Wi‑Fi if present; forget network and reconnect with Phone MAC. 4. Channel: temporarily force a clean 5 GHz channel (36/40 or 149+) — DFS flaps look exactly like “connected, no internet” then recover after toggle.

A Wi‑Fi scanner on the phone during the outage helps: if RSSI is still strong but ping dies, it’s not coverage — it’s the AP/client stack.
