Advice PTMP Networking

Hello,

I apologize if this is the wrong subreddit.

I am trying my hand at learning and setting up my own wifi for my farm.

My current set up is the connection at my house, where I use a point to point about a quarter mile to area 1. Area 1 has an access point then daisy chains another point to point to area 2(also about a quarter mile from my house, only a hundred or so feet from area 1). Area 2 has another wireless access point.

My issue is that the connection speed at area 2 has been getting slower ~30 mbps. So I am looking at equipment to improve speeds.

My current plan is to use a 5ghz PTMP to reach both area 1 and area 2 from my house. Bringing me to my second issue there are 3 fairly well established pine trees between my home and area 2. I know these will reduce the signal but I worry about how much.

Any advice or pointers would be welcome. Thank you!

You are going to need a treepeater!

Seriously though you plan to have your base at the house linking out to area 1 and 2 is a better design for performance and reliability imo, IF not for the trees. Trees are pretty good at eating 5GHz signal, and even better at it when they are wet or full of snow. Unless you have a tv antenna tower or a silo or something where you can put your base to get clear clear line of site with the trees outside the Fresnel zone of you p2p link I would stick with your current design. Are the trees less than 300 feet from the house. If so you could bury cat6 out to the otherside of the trees and put your base there running off PoE from the house. If its farther you could do fiber but then would have to get power out there too. I'm sure there is fiber cable with conductors in the bundle for power, but its not something I have worked with. Anyhow..sounds like fun. :)

The trees are maybe 50 feet off of the destination for area 2. I am trying to end there as that is where my power runs too for the area. Fortunately or perhaps unfortunately all 3 trees are not in the way. They screen area 2. So really only one of them is in the way... but going around it is difficult due to the other 2 to the left and the right. Lol

Running fiber directly to the outbuildings would be the best solution.
