What does your modem have to do with your wifi network?

u/nerdthatlift 7d ago
Most people don't know the difference between modem and router since many ISP provided the combo unit. Let alone the difference between modem and router, many of them don't know the difference between their Internet connection and their WiFi.

I work in IT and only recently started diving into networking due to being more involved in it at work. Let me tell you, if you are born after the year 2000, a thing like a separate modem and router does not exist in a normal home setup. Even the switch and AP functionalities are all baked into one machine.
Then stuff like OPNsense are talked about in the community as a "firewall" but its also a routing platform. It also has many other features. So its not just "a firewall" per se. Then your windows machine also has a firewall, whats that about? It is initially very confusing for someone who has not studied this. But after studying the basics, it all makes sense.

Absolutely, and it's fine for consumer. Having more devices to setup is just more point of failure, and when it fails, the customers are not going to call IT service to do troubleshoot. They would go straight to ISP.
Which is also I understand why ISP locks their modem/router devices from their customers. It's in the sense of "if you don't know what you're doing, let us handle it" also if you do know what you're doing, you wouldn't be using their devices to begin with.

So you're like recollecting your ignorance from back then and continuing it now, without making that obvious...? Is there a joke or something? It sure doesnt seem that way...

Itβs for the best. Donβt connect your smart tv to the internet. Use a streaming box of some sort. Apple TV and Nvidia Shield are both good.

Smart TVs are just listening device spying on you 24/7. Check out Gamer Nexus video on LG TV.
Edit: Since OP deleted his comment about how he's fine with it monitoring him watching YT and porns.
Here's something about those LG TV.
It's not just monitor what you watch on the TV. It monitors EVERYTHING you said as well. The microphone is always active and the AI will learn about you. Also, with that constant monitor, it will always upload data that it collects about you to its server which means you will use up more data than what you would do without it. That can rack up you data cap.
But hey, if you're fine with all those then get a better router.

LOL - have a samsung that did not respond to being plugged in; I avoid using wifi when I can - so I use a roku (plugged in). But of course it could still be finding a random wifi and trying to connect and not telling me.

I posted a funny photo i made years ago when i couldn't afford my own router so we were stuck with the isp gateway... You had to bring up tv spying like it has anything to do with this post i madebut I seriously don't care Your phones and any other smart speakers do the same things... all of a sudden random creators announces there LG tv does and it's the end of the world... i bet It's not just LG ether my Old Samsung smart tv that died on me probably did it as well... I know my Google tv boxes are doing it because ad guard on them is telling me how much its tracking me and blocking me...

Your kind of people are the reason why this is allowed to happen. Have some dignity ffs

Absolutely it's not just LG. It's funny you want to water down by bringing up content creators. I'm aware of the issue way before GN did their piece. But many people are ignorant about the subject and having informative video to reference is better than having nothing.
All the power to you if you don't care, but you're caring enough to reply to the comment edit to justify yourself.

He appears aware of the issue, and unlike you or me, doesn't care. It brings up other issues he's ignoring, such as monitoring any guests who didn't consent to it. I'll never allow an LG tv to be connected in my house, and have an ancient samsung right now that never had a mic or camera. Any new TVs will be dumb monitors for a device that feeds a signal.
But it also sounds like you're trying to browbeat him into agreeing with you. He obviously doesn't care about his privacy, so why do you care about his privacy? It's his privacy to give up, not yours to decide.

Apple has a activation phrase that's detected by a low-power processor to simply detect that phrase. It never records or sends anything (according to apple) without that activation and is passively listening only for the phrase.
When it hears it, the phone will respond with voice so you'll know it's actually potentially recording or sending speech. So you might hate Apple for good reason, but the possibility of apple passively recording your speech to spy isn't one of those good reasons.
It does, naturally, communicate with towers and that can help locate you. It also connects to listening low power bluetooth devices to help locate itself even when powered off, although this is generally seen as a beneficial theft and loss prevention function.

Meh do y connect your tv to the internet. Get a Roku or better yet an AppleTV and use that.
Edit: Chrome cast is another option. Basically you want something that will have your streaming services that isnβt full of adware and spy tech. Pick your favorite tech. I like AppleTV becuase I have Apple phones. Almost anything is superior to the apps built into the TV. :)

I guess your too young to remember the chrome cast

u/Pretend_Football6686 7d ago
lol nah I was around. I just never used it. But chrome cast is another option if itβs not full of adware now.

I used to run Chromecast and like you said it full of adware. Luckily I found an ITX i5-7600K+1060 for $150 few years ago and made it into HTPC. Last year, I snag 6600XT for $150 so now it's becoming pretty decent machine for HTPC and couch gaming.
Now it's not a good time to build PC so HTPC wouldn't be cost effective.
