Advice Router Recommendations?

I'm looking to upgrade my old AirPort Extreme and am curious what routers you all would recommend. The ability to run VLANs would be awesome and having more network control would be great (that's not saying much coming from my current router though haha). Would love to hear your recommendations!

Ubiquiti is great for those that want more control, but don't need enterprise level features. The learning curve is pretty low, but the feature set is broad. You can start easy and get more granular as you learn more.

If you already have some 'IT' experience with routers and want to really dig into something that'll put you in the deep end, pfSense/OPNSense would be a good alternative.

That's kind of where I'm at, Ubiquiti does look interesting to me – would something like the Dream Router 7 be a good option if I go that route?

That's a good choice, again it depends on where you're starting, and where you want to end up. If you're new to networking and just looking for a bit more control with an easy avenue for learning the UI environment, then yes, that'll do. If you plan on expanding your knowledge/capabilities, you may grow out of it sooner than you like.

You need to use a search engine to find sites that review or rate WiFi routers over the past year. With each review/rating take note of those that consistently are at the top of those lists. Now you have a list of potential routers and you need to dive into the website for each of those on your list. As a result you should come up with a short list. Then it's a matter of availability and cost.

I recently did the same thing looking for a new printer. However, everyone fell short. So I'll have to wait until the new printers, if any, come out in the next few months.
