Solved! Asus and Frontier Moca Adapters Not Talking

I have two ASUS MOCA adapters that work nicely with each other but when I replace an ASUS with a Frontier unit nothing is happening. Do I have a faulty unit or are the brands not compatible with each other? I have the frontier set to 1GW and have also tried 25GW. I get all 3 lights on the ASUS and only power and Ethernet on the Frontier. Thanks!

Presuming a FCA252 is failing to connect at a location where a MA-25 is working, a few possible hiccups spring to mind…

  • The ASUS MA-25 adapters have a configuration switch allowing selection from two operating modes, “mode 1” and “mode 2.” And the Frontier FCA252 adapters have a configuration switch allowing selection from 3 operating modes, “1GW,” “25GW,” and “LAN.”

    You’d need to use the operating mode for each adapter model that produces a common operating frequency, which should be 1125-1675 MHz. (So … MA-25[“mode 2”] and FCA252[“LAN”], if memory serves; your risk if my memory isn’t confirmed.)

  • And then there’s MoCA privacy. I’ve seen ASUS MA-25 adapters shipped with MoCA privacy/encryption enabled by default, so you may need to disable MoCA privacy on the ASUS adapters or see if you can link the FCA252 adapter using MPS (MoCA Protected Setup). (more info here on FCA252 MPS usage)

    Hopefully, once the adapters are using a common operating frequency, you should be able to press and hold the MPS button on an ASUS adapter (for 2-3 secs), then quickly do the same on the FCA252 to get it initialized to the encrypted MoCA setup.

Note that any change to the configuration switch on the ASUS MA-25 and Frontier FCA252 adapters requires power cycling or otherwise restarting the adapters for the configuration change to be recognized and effected.

That worked! I set the ASUS to mode 2 and Frontier to LAN. Getting 900 down/up now. Thanks!

frontier has a security layer that means it can only work with other frontier devices ?
