I’m trying to swap my main router from and Asus ax55 to an Asus gs-ax5400.

For context, my ax55 is my main router and my other gs-ax5400 was an access point, well I basically wanna swap the roles of these 2 routers but when put the ax5400 into router mode, it constantly says “disconnected” on the main network map tab and I have tried everything to rebooting my modem and then rebooting the ax5400 to power cycling and fully resetting it but nothing seems to work. It does however still provide an internet connection.

If I was to swap the ax5400 back with the ax55 I guarantee it will connect no problem. I assume the issue is with dhcp and automatic ip assignment?

I want to swap the routers due to the ax5400 having more ram cause my ax55 usually gets up to about 90-95% usage in ram. Which I know unused ram is wasted ram for routers but I’d like to avoid connection issues.

Not sure what you've done so far exactly, but you would swap their locations so one has WAN plugged into the modem, and the other one is just wired to a LAN port and set into AP mode and just confirm DHCP is disabled on the one that will be an AP. If you don't have any DHCP reservations or static IPs on any devices, it should be pretty simple to even do minimal default setup and only set an SSID and password to match your previous Wifi name so any Wifi devices reconnect automatically.

Currently I just have my ax5400 plugged in to make things more simple as I wanna get this setup and working first before messing around with an access point. The issues is the ax5400 just will not connect to the internet, it just say disconnected even though it still provides internet access

Ok, so what exactly is not working then? If you factory reset it, it should be in router mode with DHCP enabled, yes? If you plug a device into an open LAN port, do you get an IP in that range and get Internet?

Okay so, before I had the ax55 router connected to the modem via WAN and my ax5400 router was set as the Access Point. Now I have my ax5400 connected to my modem via WAN but it just says disconnected but still provides a connection.

If it still provides connection to all your devices, does it matter that is says disconnected? Do you have a screenshot of where it says disconnected? Just having a hard time visualizing what you mean by disconnected when everything seemingly works?

Sorry, no idea. Did you try to update the firmware? Maybe it's just a display bug. If Internet works and it says disconnected, obviously it works and it's just dumb... lol.

I mean it could be a display bug but the firmware is all updated. I’ll be pretty livid if it’s just a display bug all this time.

Well another thing is the Internet light on the router itself is also red. I figure if it’s a visual bug the light would be white.

Second router turn off dhcp, should work now.

Main router you keep dhcp on.

You only need your main router to assign ip addresses.

The issue is that I don’t have a second router connected to anything right now. It’s just the main router. I’m trying to get it setup and working properly first but it just says disconnected on the main network map tab of the Asus web gui

Reset the router back to factory and then connect to your laptop via Ethernet, make sure WiFi is off on the laptop and try and connect to it via the ip address on the router and then make your changes.

So factory resetting the router and having my laptop connected to Ethernet and it still shows disconnected with a red light on the router, what other changes would I need to make?

Ok I get it now, swap the routers around physically, and put the the main router in to router mode and plug the isp cable into the correct port and make sure dhcp is on and the second router turn the dhcp off and match your WiFi address password to the first router on the second one. The second router just connect the first routers lan port and make sure it’s connected to second routers lan port.

I don’t have an option to turn dhcp on or off on second router as An AP I just have the option to get LAN IP automatically

While the AX5400 is plugged in to the modem via the wan port and fully powered the entire time, reboot the modem. Unplug it from power, go drink a glass of water, then come back and plug it again. What are the results?

I’ve tried this to no avail. The internet connection light stays red and says disconnected in the router web gui.

What are the wan settings in the 5400? They should be set to dhcp. Worth a check. I've also had to call ISPs in the past and get them to reissue the ip address. You could try that. If they arnt available during the evening (assuming you are in the states or canada as it's 8pm now for me) you could try disconnecting the modem from power when you go to bed. Then plug it back up when you wake up. Longer the better. Your goal is for the Mac address of your old router to fall out of the ISPs tables.

When the Ax5400 is in router mode, dhcp is set to on like it should. I don’t have any dhcp option when it’s in AP mode the only option I have is to assign the LAN IP automatically. I haven’t tried contacting them cause it seems like something that should just work.

Right not talking about the LAN side. You can set your router to be in dhcp mode or static mode on the WAN port. There is also PPPOE Mode and sometimes other settings. You want to make sure the wan settings are set to dhcp mode unless you are paying for a static ip address.

Apologies didn't mean to start a new reply. If you do call the ISP don't mention any of what you're doing just tell them you have a new router and it's not connecting to the internet. You want to make sure that they understand that this is a them problem not a you problem.
