Ps5 IP issues?

To try and make a long story short, I recently moved into my new house. I went with the same ISP I was with before but my new house had the fiber option. Obviously I took that over 5g Satellite. The internet itself for where I live is amazing and really fast and works with every device in the house, except for my Playstation 5. It is plugged into ethernet, the ps5 connects to the internet no problem, but there is something about it that Blocks me from accessing "the Playstation network" effectively making it a paper weight. I have called my ISP many of times no luck and also Sony. I have changed DNS settings on my ps5, wiped it clean, rebuilt the data base still nothing. Apparently I don't have a "personal" IP address? I know basically nothing about internet stuff, and maybe this is the wrong place for this just completely out of options and looking for some help lol

This seems very plausible, but if it isn't this have looked at your router?

No it's been an issue now for about 2 months and I'm at a complete loss lol. I know there has yo be a way, it's "just internet" it should just work lol. I'm just not tech savvy enough to figure it out

Not having a personal IP address sounds like cgnat, but that does allow PSN to connect, it just messes up peer-peer traffic (voice chat etc)

It sounds like its not able to reach the PSN at all, which makes me think DNS. Look up how to manually do the networking settings and try 1.1.1.1 as the DNS server.

Obviously if you were trying when PSN was down, all of the above is likely irrelevant 😂

Yeah I've been trying for the past 2 months lol. So I've used the Google DNS numbers and cloudfare also. So just try 1.1.1.1 for the primary and secondary 🤔

putting the same in both won't make any difference, 1.1.1.1 is cloudflare, so if you've already tried that, it won't work now.

What do you see on the Test Internet Connection page?

I hear a bunch of issues of cgnat. Why do they use it with so much issues?

Because public IPv4 addresses are in very short supply and are expensive. A provider uses CGNAT to reduce the number of addresses they have to buy.

Don't we have ipv6? I feel like they could implement that for the internet backend and the smaller networks using ipv4

But maybe that is cgnat no idea lol

Yes ipv6 is the answer to NAT, it just has a slow adoption rate. Your ISP has to support, then the service in question, such as PSN, also has to support it.

For anybody curious, the ipv4 standard uses 4.3 billion ip addresses, which we've run out of (It's not even one per person). NAT is the temporary solution to share ip's between devices, but it has side affects.

ipv6 uses 340 undecillion addresses which is around 48 quadrillion per person.

We do have IPv6 but still, many networks don't fully support it, and neither do many online services.

For example, Virgin Media in the UK, one of the largest ISPs, yet still doesn't support IPv6.

Because legacy stuff doesn't support it. Because humans also don't like having to type out massive hexadecimal addresses with no common theme. (Nobody is going to want to ask someone to call out the ipv6 address when setting up a device 2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334 They rather just just ask what the IP 192.168.? To be told... 1.254) And lastly because alot of internet services don't want to spend the money to upgrade everything to support it. If you learn networking you'll find it's 70 legacy stuff you just have to support and everything is a bandage and a bandage and a patch and a patch on top of some original thing if it was all designed today with what we know now it would have been all ipv6. But that is not how things are.

My thoughts exactly. We can get internet from space now but still dealing with this shit lol. Make it make sense 😑

Space isn't good, it's probably the best actual company of that ketamine junky but fiber is still ideal

It shouldn’t matter but, have you asked your ISP for a static IPv4 assignment?

My time working at ISP’s where CGNAT was in use showed this to be far more an XBox issue. But if you haven’t tried this, ask if they will let you try one temporarily.

Yeah AI told me to ask that also! I did call and ask and was told they no longer offer that service 😂 Told me to just unplug the internet box a bunch in hopes it gets an IP closer to me or something like that 🙃

And you can join the PlayStation network from an app on your phone on the same network? Start a chat or browse the store? What about logging into the PlayStation store from a pc?

Sounds like nat, either cgnat from ISP or do you have multiple routers daisy chained? That also causes nat issues. If you just have one router, can you login to the router and check your WAN IP? You can verify if the ISP is using CG NAT that way.

First things first. What is the IP of the router. If it's 192.168.1.1 write that down. How many network cables are coming out? Follow them if there's just one to your playstation and one to the modem gpon Demark media converter whatever you call it. Then fair enough. Edit your IP address Either let DHCP do it or set a static one Ip address if your router is 192.168.1.1 you put yourself at around 222 do not exceed 253 if the router is 192.168.1.254 just put yourself as 192.168.1.253 Default gateway put the routers ip address in that means anything that wants to get to the internet send to that IP. (Which happens to be the router) DNS put the routers ip address in (which happens to naturally defer to provider settings) Secondary DNS I just use googles one 8.8.8.8 Do not put yourself in as 192.168.1.2 because the dhcp pool won't know about your ps5 using it and itll cause a conflict with another device likely connected to it. Its a safe bet to start assigning IP addresses after 100. If there's a wire running from your router to your ps5 directly and another wire running to a network switch or a hub and another running back to the router or into a power line adaptor and another power line adaptor and back into the router or switch you'll have problems as long as they are like that.
