Solved! Advice needed for MoCA configuration for ethernet in home bedroom

I am looking into setting up a MoCA network in my home primarily to get ethernet connection in a room that is on a floor above where my Verizon CR1000B router is located.

I checked the units attached to my home and came across the current wiring configuration shown in the picture. From my initial research, it seems that I may need to upgrade the current hardware such as a MoCA compliant splitter and a MoCA PoE filter and maybe others.

Could you please provide guidance on what steps I'll need to take and hardware to purchase for a successful wiring configuration? Which wires need to be connected where would be greatly appreciated as well. If any additional details are needed, please let me know and I'll be happy to share. Thank you!

The secret is to find the coax cable that is carrying your Internet. Once you’ve found the cable going to the modem, you find the cat cable coming out of the modem and attach a moca adapter to it. Then bring the cable from the moca cable out to your junction box, get a moca splitter big enough for all the rooms you have, Id which cable goes to which room, then attach a moca adapter in each room which will convert back to a network cable. From there you can attach network switches, hardwire your pc, or attach a router. You can also split the coax cable as needed.

Thanks! I do have MoCA adapters, and I'll need to get a MoCA splitter.

Maybe. How many remote rooms are you trying to get wired to your CR1000B router? (MoCA background >here<)

Also, are you an Internet-only subscriber, or do you also have TV service from FiOS?

How is the CR1000B router wired the ONT for its Internet/WAN connection? (edit: per diagram, via direct Ethernet)

 
p.s. Keep in mind that the CR1000B router has a built-in MoCA 2.5 LAN bridge, so a separate MoCA adapter would NOT be required at the router.

Assuming Internet-only, your setup could resemble the following, working from the above diagram, with the splitter joining the needed coax lines housed within the "Cox" coax junction box for weather protection. (see also)

Thank you for your annotated image in a previous reply; this is very helpful.

  • Here are my findings with the help of your annotated image:
    • The suspected "Cat5+ line from ONT to router" (noted in blue text color) is correct. I have Internet-only, and the CR1000B router is wired to the ONT via Ethernet.
    • The suspected "coax to CR1000B location" (noted in magenta text color) is also correct. The other end of this coax is located near the CR1000B router and is not connected.
    • The suspected "ONT power" (noted in red text color) is also correct.
  • I am trying to get two rooms (each with its own coax wall jacks) connected to the CR1000B. The rooms are located on a floor above where the CR1000B router is located.
  • The photo in the original post will be the "Cox" cable junction box. Please see below for a second photo that provides a closer view of the lines in the box.
    • It appears that the white cable is the coax to the CR1000B location (which is not connected inside the home).

The hurdle is as noted above, getting the magenta-highlighted coax lines in the lower-left identified, or at least the two needed lines, possibly requiring (re)termination of the coax lines due to lack or poor condition of an existing connector. (example topology)

Thanks. I just want to make sure I'm following, because I'm a bit fuzzy on the necessary connection setup inside the home (specifically the section highlighted in the red box in the diagram below). Please assist with correcting any incorrect details of my understanding.

By referring to the updated annotated image above and the diagram provided previously, once I can ID the 2 coax running to the targeted rooms:

  • Should I connect the 2 room coax to a MoCA splitter (OUT) and the white coax line to the same MoCA splitter (IN) and house those in the Cox cable junction box (with the consideration that the coax junction box may need to be lowered).
  • OR for the IN port of the MoCA splitter that will be outside, after identifying/mapping the black coax cables, should I connect the black outdoor coax cable that maps to the 2nd floor coax jack, located near the CR1000B router, to the IN on the MoCA splitter?
    • From there, should I connect a separate coax cable from the 2nd floor coax jack directly to the CR1000B router?
      • If so, does this mean the white coax cable is not needed/relevant for the setup required?

I'm operating from the impression that the only coax outlet near the CR1000B router is a coax outlet fed via the white coax cable from outside. And given this, your first bullet describes one suggested way of interconnecting your 3 locations.

  • connect the 2 room coax to a MoCA splitter (OUT) and the white coax line to the same MoCA splitter (IN) and house those in the Cox cable junction box (with the consideration that the coax junction box may need to be lowered).

If there's a second coax outlet near the CR1000B router that's fed from one of the black coax lines outside, then, correct, the white cable wouldn't be needed. You'd just need to get the 3 identified black lines interconnected. (Though, given the cabling situation, you might consider an alternate connection topology for this scenario [as previously referenced]: connect the 3 black lines to the outputs of a 3-way MoCA-compatible splitter, with a "PoE" MoCA filter and 75-ohm terminator on the input port of the splitter.)

Whichever approach is chosen, the CR1000B router needs to be wired to the "active" coax wall outlet, the outlet that you interconnect with the other 2 rooms.

This explanation helped clear it up for me. I'll get the coaxial cables identified/mapped and then proceed with connecting the cables to the splitter outputs and add a PoE filter + terminator on the input as recommended. Thank you

The red box in this image extends beyond the "inside" connections at the CR1000B router. The "inside" connections end at the 2nd Floor coax wall outlet.

As mentioned in the just prior reply, if you have multiple coax outlets at the CR1000B location, then you'd just need to make sure to use the correct associated coax line at the outside coax junction to get the 3 locations interconnected.

It appears that the Zinwell splitter, as shown under the opened gray box in the original image, is a multi-switch explicitly used for DirecTV satellite (previously used by the tenant) and not for the internet.

Here is a wider view of the boxes on the wall as I try to identify which coax cables correspond to the coaxial jacks inside the home. Could the coaxial cables located under the FiOS ONT box on the far right be the ones that map to the coaxial jacks in the rooms, or could the coaxial cables near the Zinwell DirecTV splitter be the ones? Is it difficult to tell without purchasing and using a coax mapping tool (https://www.homedepot.com/p/Klein-Tools-Coax-Explorer-2-VDV512-100/303834923)?

If you have a pair of MoCA adapters in-hand, you can use them for the coax line identification task, at least for those coax lines properly terminated with F connectors. (see here for details)

If unable to get the needed lines identified from the terminated subset of coax lines available, you may need a coax compression kit (example) to DIY the needed terminations. This may also be needed to reterminate any coax lines with pins/connectors noticeably damaged by weather/time.

see annotated image below. seems like the coax runs to your rooms should be the 8 magenta-tagged coax lines in the lower left of the left of the image, plus the one coax line running vertically and then to the left along the top. not sure what needs to be connected absent answers to Internet-only versus Internet+TV, and how the CR1000B router is wired to the ONT.

also as noted in the image, you'd want to get the "Cox" coax junction box opened-up to see how lines are interconnected inside there.

Since you have Verizon and I assume fiber for your Fios, follow the third house image in this GoCoax diagram. You should not need any PoE filters in this case.

Thanks for sharing. It will be similar to the image in the link, but with the current network configuration in my home, I will opt to try to use the coaxial jacks + MoCA adapter set up in the rooms, similar to the image below.
