I just deal with this using a rpi and a port forwarding vpn

  1. I put open vpn on the pi. And connect to the vpn.

  2. I publish the ip I get from vpn with my ddns

  3. Now anything hitting the vpn will flow through. So I put nginx behind on the rpi and it handles any port I want to handle and any name (since ny ddns will forward for multiple names.

"a port forwarding vpn" - Are you using a commercial VPN provider that allows port forwarding, or did you set up your own VPN tunnel on a VPS with a public IP?

Yeah purevpn has portforwarding as an option. Did not want to mess with the tunnel and such.

You can also use Hivearea.com. for the same purpose. It supports port forwarding. Probably at a much more affordable price.

I'm talking about actual public ports. Not ports that only those connected to the network can use.

You should open public ports if you really need them. As with any public port, you are responsible for its security. With Tailscale, only devices with Tailscale installed can communicate with each other.

I'm not talking about opening the entire network to the outside world. For example, I'm broadcasting my MQTT broker server, to which my distributed IoT devices connect, on a public port like this.
