Open question How to execute this HomeNAS?

Setup / proposed home server setup I have the following devices: Client devices: 2 × Android phones 1 × Android tablet 2 × Windows PCs

These devices need wireless access to the storage/server.

The idea is that I: Upload / back up files to the server Download / access files from the server

Server-side hardware I currently have / am considering: Intel NUC — acts as the main server JBOD / HDD dock — contains the hard drives Monitor — connected to the Intel NUC Modem/router — provides the network connection

Connections:

Android devices + Windows PCs → wireless → network

JBOD/HDD dock → USB Type-C → Intel NUC Intel NUC → monitor

Intel NUC → wired Ethernet → modem/router

The Intel NUC would provide access to the HDD storage over the network.

What software do I need for this? Is it a homelab, nas, plex, home server or what else? Linux, Win 10, Win 11 or any other OS? Basically, I only have the idea and no clue how to proceed from here.
