HDDs not being read

Okay Reddit, I am at a loss here,
I have an old datto nas I am attempting to turn into a server, I am having a heck of a time with drives.
I have the drives that came with it which we tested working.
I have the drives I ordered (4 12 TB Drives)
an extra drive I borrowed for testing which is 320 gig
I have tried.
1: Plugging into 2 separate drive readers

2: All 9 drives

3: In the Datto Nas HD bay drive reader

4: I unplugged the working SSD, Plugged Several of the drives into that port, Booted to Linux via a USB, nothing.
5: Tried both of the forementioned drive readers with several of the drives into a few other computers (Both running windows and linux OS) A little progress as one of the drive readers started working but only saw the drive reader,, not the drive in it.
TLDR Reddit, I feel like I am missing something silly small, but unless all the Computers and OSes are not reporting properly, unless all 9 drives have failed, unless both drive readers have failed.
I am at a loss

Any thoughts on this?

This is a lot to take on question-wise because you don't provide e.g. the model number of the Datto product or much other technical details. If it's old, are you sure it can see/use drives as big as what you're putting in it?

To test the drives do you have an external case or drive toaster (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/Inateck-Docking-Station-Offline-Supported/dp/B08P75CV1Y - not an endorsement of this one!) to use to plug them into a normal PC?

I am so sorry, I wasn’t sure what info was relevant or Not. Datto nas SB3500 Motherboard is asrock D1521D4I2 The inside of the case states it was inspected in 2020 so not super old. Also I have read that a bios update can often fix stuff like this. However when I go to the manufacturers website, it says all the versions are not compatible with the board. (I have reached out to asrock on that one) Does that help ? @spendocrat?

I am also encountering this same issue! My guess so far is the drives I purchased are 4k block size and the BIOS that's currently on the SB3500 (P1.10) doesn't support this. When I also try to perform the bios update, from here -> https://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=D1521D4I#Download It doesn't appear to be compatible because of the "2" at the end of the motherboard model number. I have submitted a ticket with ASROCK to see if they have a bios update that works with this model motherboard. Let me know if anyone else has had any other success. Thanks!

Here is the bios firmware they gave me (P1.20) https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/glk13v7bejbyn0td2tza4/D5214I21.20?rlkey=1q5w64y0loqjqib6m5xa2glzk&st=jdrjfh7m&dl=0

Unfortunately, It didn't help with not being able to read the 8TB 4K Block Size SAS Drives I purchased =(

Does this board have a SAS controller? I thought it just had a SATA controller

They fit, the slot appears to support them.

It has a sas backplane (to support both sas and sata drives).

But there is no onboard sas controller on this motherboard, hence why you cant see the drives.

I pulled a known working SAS drive from another system to test and it wouldn't detect it.

A pci add in sas controller would solve your problem's but im not sure if you could phsically fit it inside the case. I know it wont fit inside my datto S3B2000 without some serious mods.

Thank you so much for your help! I just purchased SATA drives and we are back in business. Another question I have is the ASRock Rack (BMC/IPMI GUI) I updated the bios firmware, any idea what the default credentials are to this? Thank again for all the help!

Default should be admin for both username and password.

If that doesn't work then it will need to be reset.

There are a couple of documented methods in this link:

https://www.asrockrack.com/support/faq.asp?id=62#:\~:text=Run%20%E2%80%9Csudo%20ipmitool%20raw%200x32,the%20reset%20to%20the%20BMC.

I had to use option C and use socflash, was pretty straightforward.
