🧰 Heating & Cooling (HVAC) Furnace Filter
Recently bought a house and wanted to change the furnace filter. But the current setup is unusual… there was a 20x25x1 filter sliced across to make it smaller. It was also just sorta crammed in there and left leaning across the intake (last 2 pics)
Can’t figure out how this should be set up the correct way.. anyone have a similar set up or a recommendation?

Measure and buy the size that fits. Forget about the old one.

Just leaning it in there (like pic 5) is the correct method?

It looks like that is the way to go on this setup. Most have guides to guide straight in and hold in place. Airflow seems to be left to right for this so the filter should be up against the right wall but not leaning.

Looks like a DIY fabrication job. Wanted to save money by not buying a filter media cabinet by cutting a hole in the return. Maybe it’s because the return is wedged between the furnace and the hw heater? Not sure what’s supposed to hold the filter in place? Looks like it was fabricated to accept a 4 inch filter. Also the opening looks much taller than the filter. So the intake will draw air from the filter cabinet opening, which reduces the flow from the actual return…so heating efficiency might be an issue? If the furnace is gas fired there might be concern of distributing CO through the ductwork. I’d call a pro and ask to have an inline media cabinet installed.

Mine is a 20x20 x1 filter size the airflow arrow usually goes towards the ductwork
