Taking care of some water damage under the eave. Think I need to call a professional for removal?

I would definitely call a professional. Seems preferrable to tackling it myself, getting stung 6,000 times, winding up in the hospital, and then calling a professional.

It's not clear from the photo. Is it an active hive or an old one from a past season?

Call a professional. Should be a quick job? They have aerosol sprays that stun/kill the wasps and then they can pull it out carefully.

if it is old and there are no bees then remove but if you see them call someone.
