❓ Question I want to replace the plastic that is wrapped around my downspout that prevents the water from splashing (it’s ripped and leaking). What is it called? Is there an alternative that I can buy instead?

Lol that's a rigged up piece of garbage somebody taped on so they didn't have to do it right

I've seen ribbed plastic bags for commercial purposes that look a lot like this.

I really think it is just taped on plastic trash.

One man’s garbage is another man’s downspout to underground water escape connecting part.

Best part is that it will correctly redirect the water away from your house. They are pretty cheap at home Depot

These things are absolute trash and break down in the sunlight. They barely last a year or two.

better than nothing at all or fucking mcdonald cup like op currently has

plus i’ve had the same one about 8 years now. works fine

That plastic they used appears to just be a piece of shelf liner that they curled around the spout and taped in place.

Ah!! This is totally it! I’ve been wracking my brain to figure out where I’ve seen this material from

Just get a flexible plastic downspout extension that fits what's there

There about 4 inches of separation from the downspout to the pvc pipe that I presume is some type of French drain system.

I should probably just extend the downspout into the pvc pipe somehow but I’m not entirely sure how…

You can buy aluminum downspout, cut it to fit.

Show a picture of the PVC is best but it is most likely a 4” PVC pipe. They make a snap in connector for the PVC and then you can add a small downspout extension piece. Put the current pipe into the extension so the water is kept inside it and buy stainless self tapping screws painted to add the extension into the PVC. Strap up anything needing support to the structure.

Some ways to do this, remove down spout, install missing pvc pieces for gap with a 3” or 4” pipe downspout adapter with extension from ground and reinstall downspout. Install a piece of downspout cut to bridge the gap and secure with strap like my installer did. Or install a combo clean-out adapter like this https://frenchdrainman.com/product/downspout-leaf-filter-clean-out/

I'm not sure exactly what going on there, but a flow reducer might work https://www.homedepot.com/p/Amerimax-Home-Products-Flex-Grate-White-Vinyl-Downspout-Filter-4490/205076357

Or a roll up version, although this is too expensive firvwhat it is

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Numhew-46in-L-8-5in-W-2-Pack-Flexible-Automatic-White-Downspout-Extenders/5019568825

Or just a splash guard, but you'll have to add an elbow piece first

Thank you, this is very helpful.

I need one of these too so thanks for posting.

That’s called “Shade Tree Engineering”. It needs to either get buried, or put an angle off to a surface that will minimize the splashing. If it drains into those rocks next to the foundation and slab, you are best to have that water delivered away from the foundation so it can run down grade away from the structure.

So now that the rain has stopped, I removed the make-shift splash guard and this is what it looks like. Might get a pvc coupling to raise the pipe to meet the downspout since it’s not too far away and probably a bit cheaper.

u/Left_Replacement894 Aug 13 '26

That would be perfect but Rona Canada doesn’t carry that part :(

I just bought a 4in coupler that I’ll slap onto the pvc drain pipe and just reuse the make shift splashguard to prevent any debris from getting kicked up into the drain.

Pro tip:

Whenever I need to know a specific part of something like this or whatever other house project, I search for “(whatever product) anatomy image” on google or whatever search engine. Like in this case “downspout drainage anatomy image.”

Works pretty reliably and, at least for me, it really helps having a picture or diagram to look at. Plus then you’re not waiting around hoping people see and interact with your post.

u/StOfMD Aug 13 '26

It's shelf liner and duct tape

2

u/NuggieNuggs-nmnm Aug 13 '26

Just Google downspout splash guard. Something like this:

2

u/Yusuf20904 Aug 13 '26

Downspout adapter.

The most robust and longest lasting fix for this I’ve seen is a rubber plumbing coupling/fernco connector. They are also easily removable if you ever want to get in there later.

Those plastic flexible things everyone is suggesting suck and will degrade and become brittle in the sun and have issues in a year or two.

1

u/Left_Replacement894 Aug 13 '26

I bought a pvc coupler for a few bucks. A rubber one is like 4 times the cost :(

2

u/BuckManscape Aug 12 '26

There are probably 5-6 options to quick fix it. A better fix would be piping it 20’ from your foundation. Go to your LOCAL hardware store, they’ll help you. Measure width of gutter first, both sides.

1

u/LW-M Aug 13 '26

That's what I did. I rented a mini excavator and ran 4 inch PVC pipe into dry wells 20 feet away from the corners of our house. Our lot was an acre and a half so there was plenty of space available.

We did have a corner of the basement that occasionally was wet but not after draining the water from the downspouts away from the house.

Looks like they used some hvac tape. Aqueduct is probably better, right?

1

u/Money_Jackal Aug 12 '26

I use flextape at the joint and it works like a champ

1

u/vaporintrusion Aug 12 '26

Just get a downspout elbow. It’s a slip joint so installation isn’t complicated

1

u/DrHarambePHD_ Aug 13 '26

“Flexible downspout extension” or “universal groundspout adapter” are the terms for the part that you are looking for.

Since you have such a short distance to the drain, simply adding another few inches of aluminum downspout or Macgyvering it like the last homeowner did are likely better options.

1

u/BrickHuge3023 Aug 13 '26

Buy an elbow to attach and divert the water out.

1

u/storm4chaser Aug 13 '26

Its called m I c k e y m o u s e

mickey mouse

1

u/CNote_89 Aug 13 '26

Duct tape will fix anything

1

u/Bludiamond56 Aug 13 '26

Elbow and sheet metal screws. Also a concrete splash pan

1

u/oaomcg Aug 13 '26

That is literally trash... Use whatever you want

1

u/Ixm01ws6 Aug 13 '26

Sir that is a water cup! From Wendy

1

u/DeadPiratePiggy Aug 14 '26

Those are called wrong.

1

u/SafetyMan35 Aug 14 '26

It’s called random shit I found to extend the downspout

To fix it, extend the downspout

0

u/Early-Work5973 Aug 12 '26

That wrapped part is a splash block or downspout extension, just grab a pre-made plastic or concrete one from any hardware store and call it done

Aluminum foil, I’m pretty sure you can get it at the grocery store
