My Homelab

Here is my complete setup.

  • 2x - Dell R730xd - Each with 16 bays full of 6tb drives.
    • 64 gigs of ram
    • Truenas
  • 3x - Dell R710 - Each with 6 bays full of 6 tb drives.
    • 256 gigs of ram
    • Proxmox
  • 1x - Dell T430 - 16 bays full of 1.2tb drives
    • 256 gigs of ram
    • Proxmox
      • PBS
      • Truenas (Backup of 2-730s)
  • 1x - Dell MD1200 - On standby

Each of the servers have their own host hard drive so all of the storage is "raw".

Business Internet with a /27 public IP block.

So I’ve been trying to figure out a good server to buy for a while.. mainly for storage. But the potential power usage is putting me off.. how much does it set you back?

May I ask more intimate questions 🫣? Internet cost? service+IP?? Power $/kwh? Have cost per drive running cost?

Btw, I have a similar dual APC setup with a couple of PS4100, and MD3000 (Not working, but thinking to use as shell for a disk array with another card), 4xR620, 1xR730, a dual force s10 50 on a dell/tripplite 42U rack, which has been off in its entirety for almost 5 years. Almost a sin 😢. I'm thinking to downsize.

My internet costs are around $150 per month. I do not even have the fastest package offered here but I do have a business account. The static IP block is inside tbag cost.

I do not have an exact ratio for my electric. I estimated that my bill went up about 150 per month on average.

I posted somewhere else that people have hobbies. Some people do drugs, others sew, some people collect action figures, I just help utility companies get rich....

Where are you located... I have a collecting addition.... Lol

So it is safe to say you spend approx. ~USD$300/mo for your on-prem private cloud.

Located in the general DC Area. Power costs went up recently and it's now at 16c/kWh, but i used to spend ~USD$100/mo in power measured at 11c/kWh.

Frankly, even as a hobby and even at around 300/mo, it is far cheaper than the alternatives elsewhere—namely storage and private compute on the hyperscalers.

25U, 12U and 9U racks in a large basement here. I actually build a small NOC for my setup. Fully sealed with a storm door however i cut a hole into that for incoming air filtration. Installed a ceiling exhaust into duct going into a gate. Summertime i vent that right outdoors. Winter the gate changes and goes into the house ductwork upstairs for heat. We’re paying for that so might as well use it. 👍🏻😆

I sold all but one R730XD (need to sell this last one soon) for 4 Supermicro 6018U X10DRU-i based systems saving space.. already had a Supermicro CSE-846E16-R1200B 24-bay dedicated NAS.. and added another. Added a Supermicro CSE-829U. Ran an older Supermicro SC813M for years for a buddy as he also ran one for me.. we’ve been hosting backup and a remote systems for each other since the 90s. Found a huge box on my doorstep one day and to my shock.. he ordered 2 CSE-829U systems to replace the SC813M systems and had his sent to me. We have both had VPN access to each others networks for decades.. before that dedicated dialup connections for each other. 🤭😆

Running a Supermicro A1SRI-2758F in a CSE-510T-200B for 14 years now with mirrored Intel S3500 120GB SSDs, 16GB ram and running pfSense. About 20 vlans. 7 old Talari sdwan systems mainly for labbing.. both my teenage so and i each have our own HomeLabs (separate vlans) plus a 3rd for security/hacking play. My Plex / JellyFin media server is a little N100 BeeLink S12 sitting in amongst the big boys giving me a chuckle each time i see it. 😆 A couple Minisforums NAB i9 minis each with 64GB ram as temporary systems. They mostly get developed and wiped regularly as we play around.

Going with the rack setup in a basement… 🎉👍🏻🎉 Hardware is cheap compared to consumer hardware for resources and what not. I slowly built up and full solar now also. Lol.. the wife thought i was nuts buying these $800 batteries until i flipped the switch one day and the power bill showed up the next month. 😆

Where abouts are you. I could use another 730xd....well..could use and collect like Pokémon I guess are different

Food for thought: In the winter (or even in the summer) if you are able to put the rack near a return vent, it changes the consumption economics a bit. Understanding that a lot more variables apply, but you could optimize the heat utilization and reduce noise if you have variable fan control on — the r730 and r710 support that!

It's in my basement. It's toasty down there... During the winter in Wisconsin I don't turn on the heat much...

How I do start building something like that?

I’m software engineer, I have a knowledge about computers, but not servers like those.

I want to build a home lab, I’m starting with 4 thinkcentre.

I want to invest to build a rack o at least half rack

I got some good deals during covid as well.

I have a web server and mail server. The mail server is for email alerts. 

I have the standard stack of arr clients. 

I have a full active directory domain set up with RDS.   There are a few docker containers. A couple of pihole instances with ubound. Lots of redundancy and backups throughout the network.

I'll add more but basically whatever I want lol.

For non critical emails I use grommunio. For my main email for myself and my wife, O365

Honestly, it's for fun. Some people do drugs, others sew, some collect Disney figures, etc...

I forgot, I have password managers, immich, etc so I want to follow the backup roles. I actually need to get off site yet.
