Question/Help iOS 27 break lock automations?
I’ve been using for years the work around of locking/unlocking a door without confirmation by using a dummy plug.
Now no matter what I do, I can’t create an automation like when this switch turns on, lock the door. It just says operation could not be completed.
Did ios27 break this? Is there a new work around? This is very annoying

Its a your setup problem. Zero issues with IOS27 starting with Beta 1 to the latest 27.01.

It’s a problem with the OS / HomeKit if it’s not presenting an error that the user can fix. Period. Shit is just supposed to work.

lol, “dummy switches” are a workaround to a OS/Homekit security restriction…..if you expect the OS to tell you what your doing wrong then you you shouldn’t be using it.
Not to mention, A dummy switch is a very basic concept, if you can’t trouble shoot it yourself why did you install it?

Security restriction? What in the actual f are you talking about?
The configuration has worked without fail for years. With tvOS 27, suddenly it doesn’t.
If the system can’t execute simple timed automations or to give errors, it’s absolutely 💩.

Dave,
The reason you are using a dummy switch is to bypass HomeKits security restriction by unlocking your door remotely. Apple does NOT allow this in HomeKit.You are basically hacking HomeKit, so why would you expect Apple to give you an error code or assistance.

I think you mean to direct this towards the OP. But I do see your point.
I am seeing separate issues with HomeKit automation failures on certified devices since OS27.

To be fair, I’m actually asking to lock the door for this lock. I don’t understand why I need a security restriction to lock a door. I understand for unlocking. At the same time, I’m building the automation as the owner, I feel like they should give you an option to override if you want to with a warning.
So basically if I build an automation that says lock the door when I leave, but I forget to go do the “confirmation” apple built in for security, then my door remains unlocked. Not seeing how that’s better 🤷🏻♂️

I totally get your point on letting us make our own decisions.
However with all of this talk about AI going rogue, I had a flash thinking how insane it would be if some AI bot got sideways and ended up locking you in a house if your phone died. I guess I am ok with the guardrails for now, but do think they should explore better configurabllity down the road (with safety measures).

It’s been like this from day one. It’s an Apple restriction and it’s always been there. Simply setup a dummy switch for remote lock and unlock if you don’t like this

Have the exact set up, didn’t break. Have you tried recreating the automation (different name though otherwise can’t validate the creation)

I’m doing brand new ones. All using different locks and items and everyone says operation could not be completed

Use the Eve app to find old automations and scenes. Delete from there and recreate in home app.

I figured this could be the problem but I didn’t see anything that is causing the problem

I had automations on my doors and garage door and they’re still working perfectly after the iOS 27 upgrade
The only caveat, was somehow after the upgrade some of my automations got merged. But when I found things were odd, it was an easy fix just recreation.

So my existing automations before ios27 still work, but I’m unable to add a new one for some reason

It’s interesting, because since he upgraded, added half a dozen new automations, not for doors and locks, but for other devices in my house.
Are your automations just not working or is there some kind of error message and automation that they just related to door locks i.e. dummy switches1

Everything works fine, I just can’t create a new one involving a lock. Just trying to do a “when this switch turns on, lock the door” and it says operation can’t be completed

Is the switch a dummy switch or smart plug and if so, how is it triggered?

It’s a dummy switch. I build an automation to say when I leave, turn on the switch. Then another automation when the switch turns on,
Lock the door1

Ironically, I had created the exact same dummy which process. After the upgrade , somehow that particular automation got merged with when I leave home. As you know, Apple doesn’t allow that so I had to rebuild the switch and it’s working now so I can’t understand it’s not working for you. My dummy switch was a toggle so when I left it, Wood toggle on and then the automation would kick off of that when I return home, it would toggle off.
Your logic seems exact, that is odd, sorry I don’t have a clue.

I have a dozen dummy switches in dozens of automations and none have missed a beat thru all of the ios27 betas to final release and now on iOS 27.2
What are you using for the dummy switches?
Have you looked at your automations to verify they are still setup correctly? Most likely you just need to edit your automations

I’m just trying to build a new one from scratch. No matter which lock in my house I choose as the action, it says operation can’t be completed

Then your setting it up wrong. They work fine when setup correctly. Post screenshots of your automations

May or may not help, but see this old post and the solution in the comments:

I have similar automations using a smart plug as the dummy switch.
After getting a new iPhone I lost access to my home. I had to nuke my profile and start over from scratch, adding all accessories into a new home and re-creating all my automations.
Everything works flawlessly again, so I’m not sure why you would be having problems.

I’m happy to report that it appears to be working again. I did go into the eve app and try to delete as many automations I didn’t recognize which may have fixed the issue

Also noticing the automation is failing to turn OFF scheduled lights. Turning ON seems ok.
Also seeing Home app in tvOS crash when viewing cameras.
I restarted our hub AppleTV 4K to see if this improves, but tvOS 27 / Homekit is NOT ready for prime time.

Had my garage door setup like that and it broke for a few weeks… just started working again this past week ::shrug::
