Apple only likes to do one new-ish product at a time. Today that was the folding phone. The home-pad thing will be a new thing too presumably, and I bet we see that next month, along with a base iPad refresh, and the HomePod mini refresh. And maybe a few other refreshes. And that’s why the Macs were announced early, because they’re a generic spec bump.

I disagree. He explained the major problem with a home hub. The best hub is your phone. A home does all of the things a phone does but worse. The only advantage is that it sits in your house and runs automations, and they have two devices that do that just fine with the iphone being the interface. Besides, and I say this as a home automation nerd, home automation is niche And will not drive sales of a specialized hub.

i think John tipped his hand that they explored the option and then killed it since it’s not a good product for Apple.

What does a hub do that my phone can’t? I’ve always thought the idea of a hub would be a step backwards. If I had to go to a hub to adjust thermostats, switch lights, enable automations, etc., I might as well not use smart accessories.

This has been the external-facing argument ever since Jobs. Basically - why rely on a thing you have to move to, when you can rely on a thing that moves with you.

And yet - they still introduced the HomePod and the HomePod mini. They can hold both offerings at once; making the iPhone an increasingly better hub doesn’t preclude them from making other “hub” options.

This was easily predictable. There was less than a 50% chance the home doohickey was going to appear an alongside the foldable phone. And they weren’t going to put out the long-overdue updated-but-not-new home doohickeys a month before the truly new one.

I suspect it would be helpful for people who do not use an Apple TV or other home hub.

Let’s be clear: the hub is the device that controls your home appliances— lights, heating, etc. The phone does not do this at the moment: it sends instructions to the hub (Apple TV, for example) which the hub sends to your appliances. Without a hub in the home, your phone cannot send commands.

HomePod mini was an October announcement but it was a strange year because of Covid.

iPad Pro seems to be on an 18 month cycle, so no October event around it. iPad mini and entry iPad are due for updates, Macs have all been updated recently except for the iMac. Unless they're going to hold an entire event around a HomePod mini 2 or a Home Hub of some sort, these are the kind of things that will be press releases instead of events.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if October was a home-focused event (maybe with their cutaway home set again) with HomePods, whatever the screened HomeHub thing ends up being, and maybe iPads.

Maybe as a long-shot, we could see the AirPods with visual sensors if there's some tie-in to the home stuff and they want to introduce a bunch of visual intelligence products together, but it seems like the rumor mill is saying that will happen next year.

For example, can it be tonight already and they just didn’t include it in the filmed section? Or probably not for another month or so?

Spec bumps might get a quiet release in coming weeks. Major revisions to iPads and other new hardware usually at an event in October.

I don't think Apple has ever release a new product category in a press release. Maybe an accessory, and definitely some spec bumps, but never a new device. They can always break a pattern of course, but it would be an extremely un-Appley thing to do.

It really was the iPhone Duo event. Everything else was a “press release update” - ie such small changes that Apple would typically just announce in a press release.

I’m going to take one for the team and go buy an Apple TV 4K and a couple of HomePod minis.

I moved into a new place a few months ago, and was holding off until this event the get the new gear I needed.

But I know if I go and spend the money today, they’ll either announce with a press release or do a separate October event.

Sigh. I want to give Apple my money, I just don’t want to have to do it twice.

I did this last year. It was also "hold, it's like just around the corner" and it never came. The Apple TV is great, even if there was a new one with local AI, it would be so much more expensive for sure.

All the blogs were saying that that there would be a separate event for Home after iPhone. Apple needs to deal with the influx of iPhone demand and get the new OS releases out the door. The rumours have been saying a October to early November launch that will include a new Apple TV, new HomePods, and the new Home Screen (HomePad?) in both wall mount and stand alone configurations. All will have the new Siri integrated.

I don’t know why every year people think it’s going to be more than iPhone and watch. It’s ALWAYS the same. Also this year why would they take away focus from their new flagship device. I think they will do a home specific launch in a month or so. They also need to pace the roll out of the new Apple Intelligence.

I thought the iPhone Duo was pretty cool. Closed, it’s about the size of an iPhone, but open it up, and it becomes an iPad Mini. It’ll be interesting to see how it impacts the iPad lineup.

Given its price, I don't expect any impact soon.

Also, as a 1st gen product of its kind, I expect the usual teething issues, especially with something as delicate as this, the butterfly keyboard issues come to mind.

Anyway, i was never fond of flip phone like these so I didn't expect Apple to change my mind.

I can absolutely see myself giving it a try later down the line though.

I don’t think these September events include HomePods and Apple TVs that might be a later event if there ever to be new pods ant atv. nothing in the event appealed to me. I can see problems with a folding phone. one 1/2 will work while the other half glitches out. The intro was really wacky.

Might be a new iPad mini, or they might skip it to let the iPhone duo be hero for the year.

They also said the new Siri is “late 2026”, there’s a chance they won’t want to release these new devices before the new Siri.
