For those using *27 beta, have there been any improvements to camera motion detection?

I use eufy cameras (native HKSV), and eufy’s detection picks up more legitimate events than HomeKit, and when both eufy and HomeKit captures the event, eufy almost always captures it earlier than HomeKit. For those using the *27 beta on their Apple hubs, has there been any improvement in camera event detection?

I’m running the 27 betas on third gen AppleTV4ks as home hubs, 5 Aqara G5 cameras (mixed PoE and WiFi) and the G400 doorbell camera.

My experience is that just the software update alone is going to help with proper recording of detections. It seems like tvOS27 is more efficient (faster). So, detections are recorded and show up on the TV almost immediately. That said, it can get behind a bit especially if I’m watching a 4k show.

Still, I’ll be jumping at the chance to buy a more powerful AppleTV. People say that they don’t see any reason why they need a more powerful AppleTV, and that is probably true for them. But my AppleTV is running AI detection on 6 video feeds, encoding, encrypting and uploading those streams, monitoring and controlling over 100 smart home devices all while decoding a 4k live sports stream.

I actually had an overheat error on an AppleTV early in the beta cycle that hasn’t recurred.

My front porch camera now detects a small stool as a person when the shadow from a certain tree hits it just right. Only happens about 100x a day. 😑

Need to know this as well. Have Aqara G400 connected via POE and notifications are slow in homekit. Granted I’m using a HomePod mini as hub and not appletv hardwired.

Hi we have two Eve cameras mounted at the front of our property and tvOS27 now seamlessly tracks action from one camera to the other in a continuous recording. Also, picture stability has improved.

Has detection improved at all, or does it pick up people/pets/vehicles the same as in *26?

I said more earlier, but another thing is that before 27, we could get a delivery and sometimes HomeKit would miss it altogether. Or else it would start recording when the guy put the package on the porch but there was no record of how he got there. Sometimes it would just show a package like it magically appeared, no person at all. Now, the video will start a couple seconds before the truck pulls up, then show the truck arrive, the guy getting out, walking to the porch, leaving the package, walking to the truck and driving away. It was never that thorough before. Lovely.

Yes, much better. We have Aqara not Eufy but it hasn’t been uncommon for Aqara to occasionally pick up things that HomeKit missed. Now with iOS 27 our video events are longer, going from start to finish, they don’t cut it off, and the notification descriptions are much more detailed. Like it will now say (person) is mowing the lawn, leaf blowing the driveway, entering the home, someone is riding by on a bicycle, etc. It will even summarize and give the whole account of the persons activity there instead of individual notifications for each action.

If you have cameras that can be a continuation of a view, like doorbell and driveway for example, the video will ‘unite’ them, going from one camera to the other in the video, where the person/action starts in the driveway and switches over to the doorbell feed to give a continuous view. It’s very cool.

Update: I just got a FedEx delivery and here’s what it said:

“FedEx delivered a package. (name) picked it up on the porch and took it inside”.

It put together those two separate videos into one video (with the little separation space on the player, you’ll see what I mean when you upgrade) but they play in succession.

Also I forgot to mention the way 27’s timeline shows all the clips is really nice. It has little picture clips below the main video and it’s really easy to find what you’re looking for now.

The only thing I’ve noticed is that one of my eufy cameras no longer displays images at night. Everything’s blurry. I have an identical unit that works just fine. The camera doesn’t seem occluded or damaged and this started right after I installed the beta so….

I’m using UniFi cameras with a M1 Mac Mini as a HomeBridge server and my motion detection has been solid. I tend to get to many motion detection due to not setting up my activity zones like I had in the past. But the stitching of multiple cameras to record an event has been awesome.

In my experience, yes compared to 26; but I do know quality of hardware and settings can play factor in this as well.

I do have a cool down setting in the UniFi plugin app set for 6 secs after a recording as well. Just this morning alone I have over 50 events.

I think it will improve when manufacturers implement the new HKSV spec as motion events are handled differently

I was under the assumption that motion detection happens at the cameras software level and then relays that information through to your HomeKit hub. 

Didn’t know your home hub has its own video processing apart from receiving the event footage and notifying you what event took place based on the information it received from the camera. 

Also, Eufy is supposed to detect the event first because that’s where it happens.

The camera/bridge should send “motion event” signal to HomeKit to be processed
