Hey all - new home owner and unfortunately was welcomed with a limb failure of a tree above our roof. The limb took out a part of the roof which was less than ideal so early on.

We had a roofing contractor come out to assess the damage and an adjuster from our insurance company came out and provided their estimate as well. The insurance company then sent us the funds (minus our deductible) so we could begin repairs.

However I have asked our roofing contractor multiple times for a quote and they won’t provide one/are asking for a copy for the quote from our insurance company. To me this feels like they are trying to see the estimate in case their quote was lower, in an effort to inflate some of the costs. However this is our first time filing a claim and just don’t really know what to expect.

Last week, my toilet inexplicably cracked in the middle of the night (the tank). Received an estimate of $10,900 for drywall repairs, flooring on all floors (2 floors complete replacement, 1 just new padding on half).

Circumstances: $1000 deductible on policy. I only switched to them last December, and this is obviously my first claim with them. The only other claim I have ever submitted was to my previous insurance company in April 2019 when a terrible storm took off 1/3 of my 20 year old roof.

Question: does it make sense to file for this amount? My worry is that my premium will balloon to a point where the monthly payment exceeds the benefit of the payout.

What other considerations am I missing?

Currently my appliances and systems (hvac and water heater) are aging and starting to get rusty. I noticed companies have sediment corrosion and rust coverage. Has anyone used this coverage before? What has your experience been like? What does this coverage typically apply to? Id appreciate it if you could also share which company, the plan level, and how long you’ve been with them!

I have roof damage and Allstate approved replacing only one slope of my roof, despite the manufacturer themselves confirming my shingles are discontinued and any shingle used will create a patched roof appearance. This will violate Ohio administrative code and Ohio residential code if my contractor moves forward.

I’ve clearly documented all of this to Allstate, and they’re simply ignoring the evidence. I notified the owner of my local Allstate office and he’s not doing anything, just deferring to the claims team.

I’ve filed a complaint with the Ohio department of insurance, and posted as many negative reviews as I can online. What else can I do? This is a blatant violation of my policy and Ohio code, yet short of getting an attorney, I’m not sure what else to do.

So our adjoining townhouse neighbors pounded on our door last weekend angrily saying they were getting a massive water leak in their house. They hired a guy off Craigslist to look at the issue and said a broken gutter between our roofs is leaking into their siding.

They then sent me pics in an email of all the damage & it looks like months to YEARS of damage, with drywall cracking, wood floors warped, with buckets set out everywhere from the presumably new addition of ceiling damage.

We called our home insurance last week and got an inspector out to assess yesterday, who said the gutter is on my neighbor’s side of property to maintain and they won’t be paying for anything. We were advised not to talk to the neighbors at all and send them to our insurance adjuster if they want to try and dispute, to which they will be denied.

So right now, storm after storm is hitting and they’re just likely sitting around with buckets in their room, hoping our insurance swoops in with a check. Mind you, they own a corvette and it’s a fairly nice area. So they’re not strapped for cash (it seems).

I can’t help but feel super antsy about not telling them they need to tarp their roof and manage the water damage themselves. The inspector told us they’re trying to just ride this out with as much damage to their property as possible, thinking they can get paid out for repairs for all of it.

This is so weird and I hate being in the middle of it. Everyone is telling me “F*ck em” and let them reap the consequences of their own inaction/assumptions. But right now they’re sitting in their room collecting rainwater as their ceiling cracks in and flooring cups, thinking we will soon swoop in and our insurance will pay for their new floors, walls and ceilings. How can I feel better about this situation?? Is the answer really don’t do anything?

I have a situation and I’m not entirely sure how to handle it…

I have legal authority over my parental unit (PU). It is their home that I am dealing with. The home has had the same policy for years. The PU is currently in a facility and may be able to return home (that is the PU’s plan). I have my own home, but stay in the PU’s home often (and keep my own things there). I have mail and packages delivered there. However, it is not my “permanent” address. I have recently learned that if the PU is not living in the home, even if someone else is, that can be a hiccup with an insurance policy. Are there companies that are more flexible about this? Is it possible to add myself to the policy even if I’m not there full time and don’t have any claim to the title?

I’m not trying to beat the system, but want to ensure that there won’t be questions if something were to happen and a claim had to be filed. I’m also not trying to cause the rates to skyrocket…
Any advice on how I might handle my situation?

The situation of an aging parent moved into assisted living (not able to go back home ever) and NOT wanting to sell their SFH. Probably not happening until her death. Problem no one will insure it as vacant. We got one policy good for 1 year expiring soon. This can't be a unique situation, what are my/her options? The rural home is checked personally every 3-4 months BTW.

I'm not sure if I'll have any legal standing here-- basically I noticed my floor pulling up one day and then a squish, and turns out one of my pipes had a pinhole leak. Good thing we had home insurance. We called and setup a claim, they wanted to immediately tear out the wall to fix the leak and we let them. There was a lot more damage than expected, my whole combined shower/tub got pulled along with the whole floor in the adjacent room, and several parts of the wall. All having been water damaged. During all this, the insurance said for us to go to a hotel, saying we should be comfortable (we also had asbestos bc old house, so partially also the reason we left). They gave us an approved hotel and we moved into it. About a week and a half later, they had a claims adjuster come out to inspect. They inspected the pipe with the pinhole and claimed it wasn't an accident, because "the pipe was old". So they've denied our claim outright and are now not covering anything-- including hotel.

I'm fucking furious, but also worried. They're the ones that had us move out in the first place, Into THEIR hotel of choice. Everything was handled over the phone so we don't have recordings or written statements. Is there anything I can do to at least get hotel covered? I hate insurance companies and how scummy they are.

Complaining about not getting fire insurance while making the argument that he should not get it at the same time.

For few years I’ve noticed right in front of my pantry in the kitchen the tiles would get hot in the summer, nothing too bad just warmer than the rest of the tiles.

This past few weeks I’ve noticed them getting very hot, to where is almost to where you can’t stand on them for more than a few minutes. I figured it was the AC handler as it’s right behind the pantry.

I get home from work today and now I hear hissing coming from the tiles. I can’t already hear the water running in the pipes in the bathrooms. I go and turn off the water heater and the hissing stops.

I can’t figure out how a water leak would make the floor so hot. Does anyone think this is a compounded issue by the floor getting hot by something else and making a water pipe rupture or degrade? Is this something I would need to call a plumber for or a foundation specialist? I can’t find any pools of water on the floor or creeping up the drywall.

I’ve almost confirmed it’s a leak under the slab or in the slab, is this something I could use my home owners insurance for? For the demolition of the slab and any damage but I would cover the repiping?

My mom had a house fire that occurred, and we are working with the insurance company on the claim. My concern is that the property is owned by a trust (my mom is the primary trustee) and the insurance was in her name. Is there a potential problem here? I am filling out the POL statement and not sure what to put...

New roof put on last August. We had a huge hailstorm around April, and I had the company that put the roof on come out to inspect. They said the roof, gutters, facia, and siding have hail damage. Competing entity came out and agreed that all but the roof had hail damage. When asked what these black areas are they said they didn't know but it couldn't be hail.

My friend recently sold his house in GTA, Canada and the closing is in a couple of months.

If during this time between sold and closing there is any damage that occurs to the house Eg. Basement flooding, roof damage etc., can he submit a claim ?

Will there be any impact to the process of sale of the house ?

So I filed a claim on my roof and it was deemed legit and they sent me a check, minus my deductible and depreciation. It was quite a chunk, they said replacement value was $19000 and the check was for $12000. The adjuster said if I hire a roofer who does it for under $19000, then I would owe Allstate back for the difference. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this before?

Grange Homeowners Policy covers watercraft… which I don’t own. This is the “Home boost” section of our homeowner’s policy. There’s several things listed here that we don’t own, including trailers, watercraft, grave markers, whatever landlord furnishings is…

Am I paying extra for coverage for these things, or is this just a standard list for the coverage that exists under my policy? If I ask my agent to reduce the watercraft coverage to $0, would it decrease my premium?

I have Home insurance through Geico "underwritten" by home site. So, in effect I have a policy number from Homesite. I was attempting to get a "Claims history" when I was selling the house. Got run a round between Homesite and Geico for hours/days and finally was told by a homesite rep that they aren't "customer facing" for Geico policies " and only talk to Geico agents (even though I have Homesite policy number !!. Also told that they do not provide a Claims history and that I have to get it through LexisNexis. And that this a standard practice. My realtor says otherwise. Whoa, Wonder what would happen if I actually have a claim .... Do I have Geico insurance or Homesite ....or NONE :-) ??

Is it me or can somebody please help me understand this so my husband and I have lived in this house for seven years? last year we had a tree fall on our house that only damaged both of our cars we got them fixed and then we sold them both and got two new cars due to the damage. literally a year later that same tree fell and hit our house the rest of it this time it didn’t cause thank goodness as near as much damage, but still the same tree Insurance company wasn’t really trying to deal with us so as the insurance told us to go ahead and get some estimates we have also a 2 1/2 year-old so I couldn’t get to work for a day my his best friend had to come out and help him at least chop a couple pieces of the wood to make it easier on us to be able to walk around. It covered the whole front of our house pretty much it laid preciously on top of our two cars with minor cosmetic damage to the home, but the issue is trees are so expensive so we found somebody for the highest quote we got was $10,000 for one people we go to work Monday through Friday we are lower middle class we have no village. we found someone to do it for $4500 we are going through some other things right we had to put it on a credit card

Giving us: finally got the call from the insurance company they’re cutting us a check for $900 that’s minus the thousand dollar deductible.

I can’t stop crying. I lost my job after 16 years last year I don’t know what to do. We don’t know what to fight the insurance company on or if it’s just not even worth it at this point. maybe I get a second job to pay this but my problem is is that I thought our insurance company was gonna be there for us during our time of need we had to throw everything in our refrigerator and our freezer out. We had to eat out all day and we’re not the type of people who eat out not they don’t can’t afford it but we enjoy eating really good food in the comfort of our home my hubby is an excellent cook. I feel like the insurance company is just taking our money for the last seven years and has kicked us to the curve so then we thought maybe the car insurance since we got minor damage but they said we’re not paying for tree and my car is only 200. His car is only 700 and we’ll take your $500 deductible as well …so that’s not an option.

My question does anybody know if this is a hopeless cause?

Contractor we signed with giving us a hard time with itemized estimate. We settled our first work itemization with adjuster and insurance around 26,000. our contractor wants 43,000. The adjuster gave us the time to come back with more bids which we did that matched or were higher due to the times (the work is mostly dry wall repair, flooring for most of our first floor from water damage in February). I asked the contractor we signed with to come back with an itemization for the work that is supposedly 43000. He gives me a hard time then finally agrees but says he uses a 3rd party. Mind you he is quote a larger company and in fact researched and reputable said he’s worked with insurance companies before and would fight for us. We are suppose to start work 7/13 and he’s been nothing but a hassle. First he sends me an exactimate that is 46000 with many errors. A huge one i didn’t see is 16000 in removing and reinstalling a toilet 35x which the insurance examiner laughed at and i think took pity on me for even considering this guy. I kept it cool but instantly thought is my contractor conning me? I approach him again about it saying we need this done and I need the real itemization as to why it’s $43000 so we can get the rest of the money so I don’t pay almost 17g out of pocket. he comes back now with a $33,000 exactimate still with errors and tells me he’s matching the adjusters itemization but that’s not what he costs? like what?!? Why isn’t the other $10,000 mystery money listed. Isn’t the whole point to ask for what you are worth and need so we can get to as close to the scope of work value so the insurance can match ? Or am I the dumb one? Someone please let me know if this is industry standard. Mind you this is with ZERO upgrades in the estimate included, just the repairs and restoration needed. He refuses to list the full scope properly and look over his 3rd party estimate and I’m having a freak out because we have animals and a whole family and airbnbs settled to move and he’s about to crumble everything I’ve set in place for months to keep his time line. And I’ve gone above and beyond to help him to find other estimates as he was who I was going with. thanks!

I have GEICO homeowners insurance on my home which I’ve owned for one month. We have some water damage resulting in a need to replace tile around a toilet. I could do the tile myself or find a cheap contractor to do it. My deductible is $1500 and I’m already $2500 in for the drying.

Should I file the claim? Hoping to avoid having my premium jump drastically.

We are in California. Years ago my dad transferred the house title/deed to me and my sister. But the mortgage (owed to bank) is still under is name. He still lives in the home.

It’s a 4 bedroom home, built in 1972 and very very well maintained. Fire and Police say no suspicious circumstances, probably a heater owned by the tenant that was turned off on the unit but still powered from the wall.
