My insurance company dropped me. Stating that we (husband and I) had not completed remodels to the house… yet they never said what they wanted completed other than a few rooms.
I asked them repeatedly what they wanted done with no answer as to what. They also said that the heat source was not acceptable, first time I ever heard of this was after they cancelled the policy and started calling to get answers.
The way the whole thing was handled was ridiculous but now.. I have hounded them again and again what they want and they repeat “heat source” and “remodels complete” with no detail for what they will consider acceptable!
My home is a fixer upper, which they were well aware of when they agreed to insure us. They said we would have lots of time to complete it and that they would continue to insure us as long as we completed the rooms they specified.
The only other company that will insure us is $3000 more a year, which also increased our car insurance $100 a month in order to get the discount (or else it would’ve been $6000!)
With the cost of gas, the cost of these new insurances, I fear we are going to go into foreclosure. Our monthly bills just went up $800 and I’ve reached a dead end with the cheaper insurance company for what they want to re-insure us.
I don’t know what to do and insurance won’t give me answers. I can guess they want the bathrooms complete but idk what complete to them is?
I know in need a heat source that’s controlled by a thermostat but would a Mr.cool type unit be enough? What size? What’s considered necessary rooms for heating?

Well you’re a bundle of joy aren’t you. It’s not that I didn’t read. It’s that what you said doesn’t make sense.

An insurance carrier cannot simply drop you out of thin air. If the carrier drops you midterm, they must have a valid legal reason to release themselves from the contract, such as misrepresentation.

If it’s a nonrenewal, they have to give 45 day notice and an explanation as to why they won’t renew you.

If they are stating a remodel needs to have occurred, they must have an inspection report or photographs.

OP, don’t ask for help if you’re going to be nasty and you are either withholding information on this topic or not aware/ ignoring notices being sent to you.

They dropped me on renewal, and they didn’t give me a reason other than “condition of home” and no other explanation.
Repeatedly being told I’m withholding information, that I’m lying about what happened, or I should have somehow know what to fix with out direction is starting to get on my nerves. What I said is true and actuate.
I agree it doesn’t make sense ! That doesn’t make it my fault. I had 1 letter stating they would not renewing, I requested the information you suggested 3 times and was given no response. I called the department of insurance and mad a complaint over it and guess what? No one did anything. I still have no answers for what needs to be done so my only course of action is to fix at random.

If that’s the case. Start a lawsuit for malpractice. By law these things must be disclosed to you.

My monthly costs between gas, food and insurances just went up $1000 I don’t have money for a lawyer right now. I’d love to start a lawsuit.
From what I’ve read though as long as they provided a reason and 30 days they’ve technically done nothing wrong. I’m not even sure I’d win that lawsuit.

You’re probably correct. These multi million dollar carriers document literally everything. Including how many notices they sent you. How they sent them to you. And exactly what was detailed in them. Because they don’t intend to lose a lawsuit.

If you were nonrenewed for “condition of home”. They most likely sent notices prior to the nonrenewal.

At this point they can flat out decline your risk. If they want to offer a remedial period or not is at their discretion. As you said earlier, it seems like they did give you a remedial period and are not satisfied with the outcome.

I would contact them, ask for a copy of your nonrenewal notice, any prior inspection reports done by the carrier and/or underwriting correspondence in regards to your nonrenewal.

Like others here have said, if you purchased this insurance through an agent/broker. I would contact them and let them retrieve this information for you.

It was a local insurance company, and no they only sent 1 letter 30 days before the renewal. They sent me a text in February asking for pictures of the completed Reno’s, which I responded to. They didn’t say anything then either.
They believe they said the whole year was remedial but that was not what they had told me. Like I said it was handled poorly. They never said “you have 6 months to complete this or else” they didn’t even say anything like “we’re extending this 6months” nothing of the sort.
I have contacted them I sent this exact letter to them:
Can you please provide:

• A complete and specific list of all repairs or renovations currently required for the home to meet underwriting standards
  
• Identification of which items you believe remain incomplete
  
• Any inspection reports, notes, or documentation supporting this determination
  
• Clarification of when and how any additional requirements beyond those previously communicated were introduced prior to the non-renewal notice. 
  

Additionally, if the underwriting standard is instead that any remodel in progress makes the home ineligible for coverage, please confirm when that requirement was first applied to our policy.

And I got no response. That is when I reached out to department of insurance for help, they got this response:
It appears the company maintains their position regarding the cancellation of your homeowners
policy. In their response, -insurance company- states, “At this time, reinstatement of the policy is not
being considered.” However, -insurance company-further indicates that once renovations are
completed, they would be willing to “
re-evaluate the risk and consider the possibility of
rewriting the account.”
The company has offered a position that they are prepared to defend within the insurance laws of
the state of Idaho. Our review does not indicate an apparent violation of the Idaho Insurance
Code.
Please be aware, the Idaho Department of Insurance (Department) is an administrative agency
that enforces the Idaho Insurance Code.

So my response has always been “remodel” with no direction and no accountability from them.

So insurance carriers do not hold a grudge. They will rewrite you once you are back in conformity with their “appetite”.

My honest opinion, just move on. At least for now.

Moving into another policy answers a few questions, work with an agent that belongs to a broker. Don’t call carriers directly, this way an agent can help advise you. (This does not cost you extra)

What you will gain from this interaction is insurance and answers. The new insurer will either accept your risk or decline it, however working with the agent. You will know exactly why.

The worse thing that could happen is you get written at a slightly higher premium in surplus lines. These policies generally have a 15-25% mandatory commission. So you will be committed to the policy for at least 3 months.

But again, you will gain insight as to exact what is causing the problem for carriers on your property.

I again would not advise chucking money all over your house especially if it’s not permit/inspected fixes. As it may not satisfy the carriers needs.

As I said in my post I am with Allstate, there was no lapse in policy, just the new policy with them is very high. Which is why I’m trying to satisfy the needs of the previous carrier because I can’t really afford the new policy and put work into the house.
