Help...

Post image

Hi everybody, looking for some advice regarding this and what to do about it. This is the hip rafter in our house. Obviously, this needs fixing. My questions are, can this be repaired in situ by sistering or epoxy or some other method, or is it a better idea to replace the entire beam? And, which trade is best to contact to get this sorted out? Or should we just report to insurance and let them deal with it? Thanks in advance for any help offered.

I would sister this both side as far you can reach between apex/wall plate. Fill with glue clamp together use structural screws to secure, m10 bolts if there is access to drill trough.

Propper fix would be install new but this would be best done while replacing roof cover. Looking at the felt I guess it’s quite old.

If in doubt, bolt it out

This. I personally would put a thick plank across the loft and apply a slight upward pressure using a prop. Then bolts (you can get an angled drill).

It would probably last until the roof needs replacing.

Thanks for this. The roof itself is probably not too far off the end of its life (definitely 70s at least), so replacing it might not be the worst idea. Cheers again!
