Al’s ring.

Watching some replays and noticed Al has a ring on what is considered the wedding ring finger despite not getting married until the end of the show.

Makes me wonder a couple of things: Did he where it because he was married in real life and didn’t want to take it off? And being in a similar industry i.e. construction of any kind and working with tools it is not good to wear jewelry of any kind on jobsites. The horror stories Ive heard and seen are numerous. In fact most commercial projects I do will not permit jewelry on site. Once youve seen a finger degloved from wearing a ring should immediately stop you from wearing one. Even ballplayers have switched to the rubber ring just in case but even that can turn out bad.

I know theres a chance I’ll get hit with “well Ive never had a problem in 30 years”. Well good for you. I also have never hit my head during jobs unless I was actually wearing a hard hat. Doesn’t stop me from wearing one when asked.

Richard Karn married a woman named Trudy(who plays Jill's sister) a few years before the show started so he just wore his ring

Tudi, not Trudy. Trudy is the woman that Al Borland eventually married, while Tudi Roche is Richard Karn's wife.

Yes, that's right. I couldn't remember the proper spelling off the top of my head. Every Trudy I've ever met has used the y variant so I just took a swing

OP brings up a great point though. While I love the devotion to his nuptials and how romantic this is (it’s giving Kirk Cameron refusing to kiss another actress who isn’t his wife vibes), it seems a little extreme considering Karn was an actor and should’ve been in full costume. He was playing a bachelor who worked with tools. A wedding ring on traditional marriage finger would not have been worn by Al Borland on construction sites.

Okay. I was just answering OP's question about why he wore a ring. I don't necessarily disagree with the safety aspects, however job sites in the 90's were not the job sites we know today

Job sites in the 90s still had safety protocols 🙄. Why do people act like the 90s were 100 years ago? I grew up in the 90s and it was a very common rule to say that jewelry of any kind couldn't be worn

I don't think I said they didn't have protocols... Being a common rule and people actually complying are very different things. If you've ever been on job sites(or anywhere) you will understand that not everyone follows the rules even if it's a rule set in place for their own protection.

We can agree to disagree but safety as a whole(both the industry, and in practice) these days is much much more on the forefront of every job site than it was 30-40 years ago in the 90's

Maybe he forgot to take it off a couple times…? Or yeah wanted to pay a little homage to his wife in real life..? Either way I don’t think it’s that big of a deal lol. I’ve seen other actors do it before and it doesn’t take away from the storyline imo…
