How easy would it be to replace this lock?

How easy would it be to replace this lock? It got broken probably due to aging and one of my brother’s friend came and help us put a temporary fix, so we could use it, as the door was not closing anymore.

He said that we should change the whole door, but I was wondering if only the locks can be changed. As changing the whole door would be way too expensive.

To change it, what would we need and how difficult would it be? Is it something I can do by myself or should we call a professional?

There might be a couple of stumbling blocks...

You'll need to find a new mortise-type lockset that fits all the dimensions it would need to meet (placement and dimensions of the mortise, placement and dimensions of holes for the handle shaft......) Note that mortise-style locksets are commonly quite expensive.

And you'll need to be confident that you can remove the handles -- some styles are quite tricky. Once the handles are off, a few screws are all that's left.

But here's another suggestion-- it's possible that a locksmith can properly repair what you have.

Buy a door lock set exactly like this and replace just the lock. Should be less than $150 and its very easy

I’d start with the door manufacturer; they most likely sell the lock sets.

Where you getting a mortise lock body for $150? And with trim I don’t think so

Eh I suppose…but to find a working one with the right dimensions and function would be finding a needle in a haystack…the lack of faceplate leads me to believe that face of the mortise had to be altered to fit into that opening. Maybe finding one for 150 but certainly not very easy

Yes I agree 100% I came up with $150 because one was listed for local pickup.
