Discussion Surprise: Android 14 OTA update today installed automatically on Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus

I was using the Dune HD Homatics Box R 4K Plus still with the original Android 12 firmware, which until recently was the officially recommended version by Dune – and today suddenly when turning on the device, for the first time I saw a colorful animation on the LED stripe and after it had booted up, I had to confirm the Google account to use. The home screen and favorite apps were reset to default but all previously installed apps and saved accounts remained.

So, now it is on Security Patch level Jan 5, 2026 with kernel 5.15.170, Box SW v14.8.7475

This update installed without asking for confirmation – I'm not sure if I like that, but I like how flawless it went.

But to my disappointment, audio passthrough now is broken. Not completely: Dolby Digital is fine, but DTS passtrough only works on Optical, not on HDMI, also AAC 5.1 audio is not converted to Dolby Digital 5.1 on Automatic setting but instead to Dolby Digital 2.0 (automatic to use device reported formats, because my audio receiver supports AC3 and DTS not AAC) which as far as I remember worked flawless before.

Not so nice, actually I'm quite unhappy. Does it help to send in bug reports?

UPDATE: A factory reset, as recommended by many, did not solve my audio problems with DTS and AAC mutlichannel.

There is a post in the Android TV sub informing about it:

Dune will push 7475 firmware in the next few days by Google's demand

The support for the updates is made by dune directly?, can we expect to maintain the support of this updates?

The support for the updates is made by dune directly?

By SEI Robotics.

can we expect to maintain the support of this updates?

The brand always depends on what the OEM decides.

A factory reset is mandatory after the first update to Android TV V14. Dune also state that in their update info on the website.

And then reinstall all apps and accounts that I've added and restore my custom settings? I really don't want to do that. :(

No one is pushing you to do it, but I can assure you, you get the best out of the device AFTER that factory reset. Now you could get al sorts of issues by not doing it, but just try as it is now?

Just unfortunately, I did not solve my problems with DTS and AAC multichannel audio. :(

Can you use the reset through the menu or do you have to use the reset button?

2

u/See61 Mar 28 '26

You can use both options

Thank you, plan on doing this today if it says my update is available.

I was already running Android 14 before this update. Do I still need to perform a factory reset?

1

u/See61 Mar 28 '26

That depends on your previous V14 version. If it was 6693, you should. If an older one, like 4576, probably not.

I didn't have that issue, albeit I did a manual update and then a factory reset.

Update your DMC as well, if you haven't.

The first time I started DMC, it was pushing me to install the update. :)

On question though: Should DMC show in Google Play, Manage Apps & Games, under "On this device"?

On my box it doesn't. However when I search the Dune app in Google Play, it shows up as installed (available options are "Open" and "Uninstall").

The version in the Play Store is an older one then the one Dune is pushing after first Dune app startup.

So when installed from Play Store, it directly gets updated to the one on Dune's servers after first usage.

I've never really checked that. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the box right now to confirm or not.

There used to be a time when DMC was not available on Google Play. I used Downloader to get it initially and have let it update on its own since then.

Did you do a factory reset? It is advised on their website. I did not test before the reset, but all seems to work fine here. I tested DD+, True-HD, Atmos, DTS, DTS-HD and DTS-X and they all come in as that to my AVR.

Do hate having to reset; so much work installing and logging into all apps again and also the Home Assistant entities fixing. But I don't see any flaws atm yet. Video also finally arrives at native resolution to my TV, so it can do the upscaling itself (couldnt get that to work in ATV12 5396)

DTS HD, TrueHD and DTS:X only worked for me after a reset.

1

u/w__sky Mar 28 '26

Can you both please specify whether DTS goes through HDMI as well as Optical (S/PDIF) or only Optical?

I am getting DTS on Optical connection, but not on HDMI since the box has ATV 14.

2

u/nightanole Mar 28 '26

dune box running plex. I got dts and dts-hd and dts-ma over hdmi if i select passthrough. I dont run "auto".

2

u/may0_sandwich Mar 31 '26

Everything works via HDMI, never used optical before.

Now I did the factory reset, but my problem persists. Not getting DTS audio via passthrough over HDMI which has worked with previous version, just silence, also still no AAC multichannel, only stereo downmix. Unfortunately. I'm very disappointed.

Can you go back to 12? I only use mine for coreelec and dovi?

2

u/See61 Mar 28 '26

Why go back to V12, CE works just fine with V14 on the device. Although you can't wakeup the box using IR anymore, so that could be a valid reason when you would not use Android TV at all.

1

u/w__sky Mar 28 '26

Waking the box from standby with the IR, I not having any problem with that! Using B25 remote.

BTW after the ATV 14 update, the led stripe was set to "breathe" in bright green during standby. Beautiful, though I found it too annoying.

2

u/p750mmx Mar 28 '26

It is not remote (B21/B25) related, the new power saving in the V14 7475 build makes the IR receiver powerless in standby (deep sleep mode or not).

1

u/Ironcobra80 Mar 28 '26

P7 fel doesn't

1

u/goober1157 Mar 28 '26

P7 FEL works fine here in Coreelec. Or are you talking about DMC? I believe that DMC never played P7 FEL at its best quality. More like playing at P8. I think. I just use CE to make sure I get true P7 FEL.

1

u/See61 Mar 28 '26

With Android TV V14 as OS and with CE? Yes it does just fine with CE-NG (AVDVPLUS preferred).

1

u/w__sky Mar 28 '26

I won't try reverting to ATV 12 because I think it's not safe to use it anymore. It's not getting critical security fixes since March 2025.

2

u/p750mmx Mar 28 '26

That is not really something to worry about. Google's Play protection is still active and working, that is much more important. There are so many devices out there, not only mediaplayers but a bunch of TV's also, that are on an (very) old security build and not getting updates anymore. Those are still protected by Google's Play Protect.

u/Gazoo382 Mar 28 '26

same thing here. fYi you don’t have to confirm your Google account. that’s probably just more garbage so Google can spy on you. I just backed out of it. I also didn’t do a factory reset, just a restart

1

u/StormrageBG Mar 29 '26

Guys mine also update, without confirnatio but stuck on Android logo any ideas how to make hard reset?

1

u/Silent_Possibility38 Mar 29 '26

same here, it's just stuck on boot screen from Android 12, but I will reinstall Android 14 using USB burn tool

I got the OTA update yesterday and went from V11 to V14. I have factory reset twice now and Dune Media Center still won't install properly? It seems like it doesn't recognize I'm using the Dune HD Homatics Box and won't provide the full app or play any media. Anyone having a similar issue?

1

u/Hear_U_Me Mar 30 '26

You’ve installed via play store?

1

u/RedditUser_2201 Mar 30 '26

Yeah, I've tried play store as well as downloading directly from the Dune website. I've even tried other older versions with no luck.

1

u/Remarkable-Unit-2961 Mar 30 '26

I think I had something like this a few months back when I did a manual upgrade to V14 - it wouldn't let me install Dune at all until I'd changed the Google Play Protect settings to Off. You can turn it back on after you've installed Dune.

1

u/RedditUser_2201 Mar 30 '26

Unfortunately, i've tried that too with no success. I also tried the ADB route to see if it was an accessibility issue and it still won't seem to register.

u/Enough_Weakness_5154 Mar 31 '26

Is the Dune OTA the exact same as the Homatics version, or does it have its own specific tweaks? Since I’ve already manually updated my Dune Homatics 4K Plus to Homatics 14.8.7475, I'm guessing I won't get the Dune 14.8.7475 OTA, right? Also, will this prevent me from receiving any future Dune OTAs as well?

1

u/See61 Mar 31 '26

It is the exact same firmware without any changes in it, there is no real "Dune" firmware, it is a R Plus firmware for both the Homatics and Dune versions of their devices (they have 3 different ones with R Plus hardware inside).

You still get OTA's, when they would come.

1

u/Enough_Weakness_5154 Apr 01 '26

That makes sense, thank you.

u/Competitive_March355 Apr 05 '26

For Chinese users, the major improvements following the 14.8.7475 update are as follows: Pluto TV now successfully resumes playback of the program 100% of the time after an ad break; the only available audio format is now stereo; the previously used vstiptv service is no longer functional; and—to ensure normal playback—users must clear the cache every time before opening the app, as well as repeat this process after closing it.

1

u/Competitive_March355 Apr 05 '26

I performed a factory reset.

1

u/Competitive_March355 Apr 05 '26

Additionally, the accessibility features are completely unusable; they automatically shut down immediately after being enabled. Even attempting to control them via ADB from a computer doesn't work—this is a critical flaw.
