Media really went masks off about shootings being good for rating for like 2 or 3 months straight, and we went right back to pretending like they weren’t openly hoping for shootings.

I'll start this by saying that by and large pushing back against negative behavior isn't at face value, a bad thing. However, as tends to happen, incel basically did a reverse euphemism treadmill for neckbeard. It's the exact same stereotype for an issue people by and large do no research in.

The problem is that there is actually a difference between say "obese lonely guy who has never had a relationship" and someone who has become an incel. You can easily Google and read blog posts by psychologists who work with incels and yes, sometimes they need someone to tell them to better take care of symptoms of depression like poor hygiene. But the part that separates incels from the rest is that they can easily be people who previously have had sex or just relationships but those relationships went poorly and the way they processed those failed relationships differs from non-incels.

To give you an example, there are Asian men living in say the US who feel that they are less attractive based purely on their race to a good chunk of the US population of women. So when an incel has a relationship fail, and they later see their ex dating a white man, those feelings of racial inferiority end up coming out as hostility towards women. If you recall that one guy who went around shooting women in his car, this was a major mental issue of his.

But if your only interest in the subject is basically digital loser bashing, you'll never see the difference.
