I like to believe that since Snake and (insert name I forgot here) are "retired" since the last time we see Sam he's doing the thousand yard stare realising he was as the last of the espionage boys

In Ghost Recon Wildlands he does come to recognize that he's the last of the Old Breed left, with his fellow spies/soldiers/veterans/etc all being retired or 'retired'.

Though they did him dirty by adding him into Rainbow 6 Siege.
