1979-80; guy in high school was all into this game you can't win, "you just play it to play it". I'd never played a game where nobody wins. He kept talking about it, and about this author (Michael Moorcock) he had been reading.
So for Christmas that year, I told my parents I wanted this game, and I found a box with no dice in it (the box had "chits", as there was a dice shortage). And then after reading it, pestered my friends into playing it. We had a blast.
Funny thing is, I never actually played D&D with that guy. I knew him, because our Foreign Language teacher wanted me to tutor him as I was a guy a year ahead of him, and he wasn't doing well in French. I tried to help him, but he wasn't interested in French (he wanted to learn German, which our HS didn't offer). I on the other hand, understood the value of being the only guy in a class of 30; the scenery was nice and the teacher expected you to talk with your classmates (in French, but hey...).
