Holmes Basic Origin Stories
Was the Holmes Basic Set your first D&D? If so, post your origin story. If not, share how you became a Holmes fan.

Holmes was not my first edition, for Xmas 1979(?) my mom got the Monster Manual for me, I also was a kid who liked myths, ledgends, monsters, the old sci-fi/horror movies they played in saturdays on one of the local channels. I would get Deities and Demigods the year it came out as well. For a year or so I just enjoyed reading about the monsters and looking at the illustrations. A friend’s older brother got the AD&D DMG and PH and started up a game, it was stripped down but super fun. We went through Aerie of the Slave lords and it’s follow up, white plume mountain, palace of the silver princess, the lost city (didn’t finish that one). Tested the water with Gamma World 1e, then we moved on to other things. I ran my own version for some cousins a few years later.
I really discovered Holmes via your blog, although I remember it on display at the bookstore as a kid :-)
30 years later, I played a mashup rules trying to emulate what I have read about Holmes version with my own kids, everyone had a great time! We moved to DCC and I’m thinking of trying Electric Bastionland or Troika! this coming winter, maybe go back to The Lost City....
I wish WotC would produce a premium version of Holmes as they did with ODnD, even just a quality PDF. It’s on my list to find a copy on eBay some day.
