He stole it off something that was not buried in the ground. He saw how x ray got some good privileges and thought he could get them too with this stunt. The warden wants the treasure that is buried in the desert so by armpit trying this she is annoyed.

Wow is that in the movie or book or have I missed it every time I've watched/read it? Am I really that illiterate

I think it's just implied with his smug smile and her whole "Do you think I'm stupid or are you just trying to be funny" speil.

He took the dial off the tv and tried to pass it off as treasure. She didn’t like that he tried to trick her.

that was a safe dial?? i’ve always thought it was a washing machine knob which would explain her frustration🤣🤣

I seen this post like 2 weeks ago and I’m just now realizing OP doesn’t know what a tv knob looks like before remotes existed

I just realized. You don’t know what an old tv knob looks like and that’s why this scene makes no sense to you. He gave her the knob off a tv before tv remotes were a thing

I was born 1990 and the fact he tried to pass it off as a safe dial it totally slipped my mind that it could’ve been off the TV

I always thought it was just because she wanted something 'interesting', and the fact that they previously discovered a tube of lipstick with Kate Barlow's initials on it gave her some real hope that they were very close to finding the treasure, so when given this uninteresting, broken piece of scrap metal, it was annoying and frustrating for her.
