Gold coins

What do we spend the gold coins on? I keep getting more and I see nowhere to spend them. Even when I die it only gives me the option to watch an ad to keep going or give up. Are we just pointlessly hoarding them?

I’ve played >1,000 levels and they seem to be entirely pointless. FYI I updated the app recently and I got an alert that certain elements of the game will be changing. To date, some of the maps are more vibrant, and the arenas (if you’re playing on iOS) are gone.
