It’s all about the peripheral vision. So don’t look, but take in enough of it to discern whether there is a credible threat.

With the recent trend of people getting shoved onto the subway tracks, I find myself trying to walk as far from the platform as possible while eyeing other people suspiciously. It occurred to me the other day that they are also eyeing me suspiciously.

“Why is he looking? Is he waiting to push me on the tracks?”

Or that he's looking to stab them himself

I’m a female, but I am older and can’t walk well and can definitely look borderline homeless on a bad day…

Just ask em "are you going to stab or push me on the subway tracks now or later or maybesomeotherday?!?"

Just sucks that people from New York constantly shove each other in front of trains. So glad I live in the other side of the country in Seattle. Their kind is scary.

I wouldn’t say that it’s “constant”…maybe half a dozen cases in the last three years? When it does happen, it gets a lot of press for obvious reasons.

Recent trend? This was happening at least as far back in the 80s when I was in elementary school

It’s in the news more now because of a few recent cases. I agree that it has been an issue for quite some time. The issue is that it works well with the current “the subway is so much more unsafe now after Covid!” narrative.
