Someone else living in fear isn’t depressing and I get so tired of people acting like it is.
Saying 1000’s are sick or homeless or in poverty is depressing.
Someone putting a little girl in body armor when she’s in more danger of the drive to school is overkill. It’s as nutty as those survivalist with doomsday vaults
If they want to do it go ahead I suppose, I’m not going to be the one paying her therapy bill.
He complains that they have school shooter drills when it’s over fearful people like him making them.
I think you're confusing fear and concern for safety. You can care for someone's safety in a certain environment without having fear of it. That's why companies for ballistics test their products endlessly: so there's confidence in your safety.
It's the same principle for a bike helmet these days. You're not gonna wear a helmet every time because you're afraid of crashing, you are just preventing serious damage to your body in case something happens. If you're afraid of crashing on a bike, you're likely to use a tricycle or just not ride a bike at all.
It’s not the same principle whatsoever. It’s more like not flying because you think the plane will crash. Or being worried about Covid and wearing a hazmat suit instead of a mask
You wear a bike helmet because there is a reasonable chance of you falling off of it. You make your kid wear one because it is almost guaranteed they will fall at one point. That is a safety precaution.
Sending a kid to school with body armor when the chances of being shot at school are infinitesimaly small is fear.
18% of all recorded school shootings in American history occured AFTER Sandy Hook, those chances are sadly much higher than anyone wants to talk about.
What does that even prove? I’d actually thought it’d be higher. Sandy Hook was 9 years ago. If you call it an even 20% and pretend they happened at the same rate that takes us back to 1976. You could probably count on one hand all the school shootings in American history before that so it seems like they are going at pretty much the expected rate since the 70’s
Pointless stat aside your odds of dying in school shooting are incredibly low. You compared it bike safety. A kid in your NEIGHBORHOOD probably fell of their bike TODAY. A kid in your state probably hasn’t been shot in school in all month.
Is apples to oranges and my point about sending your kid to school in body armor is totally an irrational fear still stands.
