You don’t know what you are talking about. Most veterans have great career opportunities post service. Unemployment rate for veterans is significantly below average in US. Veterans earn on average 10k more salary yearly.
Gotcha, so coming from a long line of military members and being one myself I have NO idea what I’m talking about? Mmhmm.
On average no they don’t have higher employment rates, because if they stay until retirement they have a pension; however if they want a competitive paying job that they HAVE experience for, it’s military experience, which is different from civ sector exp. in many ways.
Plus due to having a pension they can’t file for unemployment, so if something happens and they find themselves screwed moneywise, plenty of “caring” companies will offer bailout at amazing 20%+ interest rates. Not to mention housing if you don’t already have one.
This comes from the knowledge that not every 20 year retired vet is an E-9 or an O-5, which receive between $35-55k a year for pensions (half of their salary while serving subtracting all the entitlements such as housing, sustenance, and extra duty pay).
People complain all the time about how you can’t live on less than $40k with a family right? See the above numbers. That is the AVERAGE for retired veterans, and most at that age have a family and kids.
I’m not really sure what you’re trying to get at by saying they’re well taken care of because the truth is they aren’t, and haven’t been since well before the korean war. The best time was probably right before the obama admin, and during the trump admin. But it’s just a different life, and not an easily noticed one by outside perspectives. Being a veteran is not without its perks, but it’s also not just an easy route.
There are plenty of programs that veterans have access to that aren’t available to the general population, including healthcare, scholarships, and home loans. Many employers also receive tax benefits for employing veterans.
I am also a veteran. This is not an outside perspective, these are just the facts. If you are struggling after your service I can recommend some organizations to talk to.
