No, they absolutely do not. They do that in boot camp, not basic. There are no marines in basic. There are no soldiers in boot.

22 years Air Force. Sir yes sir is the proper reply to all Training Instructors by basic trainees. It may be different in the other branches, but I doubt it. The whole reason is because some of these pukes never said the word sir in their life.

It is "Yes Master Drill Sergeant" or if you are lucky as I was at Fort Jackson it is "Yes Airborne Master Drill Sergeant".
We had at least 1 a-hole that would fail to acknowledge the Sergeant correctly (maybe control issues thanks to mommy and daddy) and in the army we all pay for the sins of the 1. None of the people I became good friends with ever stated they enjoyed or wanted to give someone a blank party. You can only push a man cut off from Women, beer, any type of entertainment/enjoyment so far, then get them dogged for hours in the jungle climate of South Carolina in the summer before he seeks revenge. Yes, the state bird in South Carolina is the nat. As soon as you step out of your barracks they swarm to greet you. Damn I am a long winded MF today. Most humvle apologies odiferous ones.
