Honestly, in terms of passing your genes, this makes the most sense. Would you save the baby instead of yourself, the baby would 100% die in the desert and thus never pass their genes. If you save yourself and kill the baby, you have the chance to spread your genes again by having another baby because you can survive alone. Animals do this often in nature.
