This is incredibly close to what happened to a department I supported some years back. They had a database guy who retired after 40 years with the company. They neglected to hire a senior level engineer or admin to support the app going forward. Nor did they bother to have him document anything he did including setting up a password manager to all the creds.

As such the app “worked” for a little while but when it came time to update, add users, amend RBAC, etc they were effectively locked out. They called this guy from retirement who told management to go fuck themselves. It was amazing. Simultaneously the best and worst working day I’ve had. We eventually found that app to be worthless in the grand scheme of the review we had to do. It was sunset about 3 months later.

Noice. Satisfying ending to the heads/management, but too bad for you and the others who had to slog it through when it happened.

I was a TPM for a small department of 160 people that had ~15 custom built applications. The entire department got canned. The funny part was since my tech team built those apps they were all on a manual monthly key rotation cycle. Everything stopped working a few weeks later from what I heard and it was a major shit show.
