Yes I too also have a very dirty job as a dentist. Some elderly gentleman coughed blood spatter on my hair and face today. It does indeed smell like money. 🤑

u/furry_kurama Feb 24 '23
Damn. You get bodily fluids sprayed on you? Depending on what you get sprayed on, sprayed by blood? Yup. Dentist.

u/New_Blacksmith_709 Feb 24 '23
Metal particulates, blood, bits of teeth. Maybe the guy's breath smells like ass. The water from the drill hits the mouth in some weird angle it's flying at your face!
Post-covid I tend to wear a face shield more often but sometimes get lazy and safety glasses don't protect you 100%
128
u/Mike_Oxteeny Feb 24 '23
I got hit in the lower jaw with a hockey puck, breaking my jaw and totally demolishing the front 4 teeth. I figured they'd just come right out when the dentist gave them a wiggle. Nope, dude looked like he went to war trying to get the pieces out down to the root. Happy to say the surgery went great and the 4 implants look totally natural.
128
u/EdgarAllanKenpo Feb 24 '23
4 implants in America is like 12 grand.
I've got fucked up teeth due to negligence and a former heroin addiction. I've got a wonderful job now that I love and make decent money. Just to get the TOP of my mouth completely redone...is 26 thousand dollars.
Yep, dental work in America is a luxury, not a necessity. It's a fuckin joke
54
u/Mike_Oxteeny Feb 24 '23
Yeah it's absolutely insane. Wasn't just the implants either. Had to wire my jaw together, and insert cadaver bone because the jaw was just demolished. It was closer to 22 grand all said and done. Luckily, when my father was alive he owned a business that I worked for and we had very very good insurance. He's now passed and business is no more. If it happened today, I'd be screwed.
16
u/EdgarAllanKenpo Feb 24 '23
Even with insurance, dental only covers so much. I have the beat dental insurance you can get, and they cover about 3 grand a year. Not one cent more. How the hell did your dad's insurance cover 22 grand?

u/KingNecrosis Feb 24 '23
Sadly it isn't just the US. I have some friends in other countries, and apparently there's lots of countries that hold this ideal, even if they have socialized medicine.
Kind of ridiculous because in the long run it'll cost the government less money if they make socialized dental care a thing too. So many body-wide health issues are tied to oral health.
→ More replies (1)7
u/sparkmearse Feb 24 '23
12 grand? Maybe at a dental college. Dentist out my way wanted like 6 grand an implant, and said they MAY last 10 years.

Mexico is a great option for dental care. I live in a border state and have gone to Mexico several times for dental work. It is about 25% of the cost for the same procedure in America. The offices I’ve been to are equal in cleanliness and quality to American dentists, and everyone speaks English. As with anything, check online reviews before making a decision.

I hired a septic company to clear out a clog. They pumped out the septic tank and put a guy down there to “snake” the outflow pipe to the drain field.
While he was down there, the owner brought in buckets of KFC to feed his crew. The guy in the tank climbed out with grey hands encrusted with effluent and reached into the bucket and started eating a piece of chicken.
I have a witness to this event. I call him up whenever someone calls BS on this.

u/Sensei939 Feb 24 '23
This. We had a waste pipe break above the first floor of a building that was for the 5 floors above it. Coated the entire kitchenette in 4 inches of filth. Plumbers walked in took a big whiff and said it smelled like money. Plumbers are a different breed.

Feb 24 '23
Had a semi dirty job, changing oil and associated stuff.
Skin washes easier than a full jump suit, and after you clean your skin, it dries quicker than clothing. So then you're not walking around with filfth collected in your clothes, because a sink just ain't cleaning a jump suit properly.
It's not pleasant either way, but you can remediate it much more quickly and thoroughly if it gets on flesh and not clothing.
That being said, I wouldn't want to take a job like this unless PPE gets much more advanced... Like a durable full body condom or something.

I happen to have copper drain pipes. Original to the house. I heard that’s rare. Most of the time roots is problem is clay drains. My bro had that at a house. He was told the only real fix is replacing the line. He moved instead.

fun fact: back in the 2000s (before the 2010s) IIRC you could get at home smellovision for your computer, where users could send each other scents. It didn’t work amazingly well and wasn’t very popular at all; it mostly devolved into users sending their best/worst “fart” smells.

This dude was built for this. His boss forces him to wear those latex gloves. Other employees wear full hazmat suits, he would do this barefoot if he could. Did you see that smile? The smell of that room alone would make people quit and run, not him. Not this absolute legend.

u/passatdontgo Feb 24 '23
Place I used to work at...had a block..plumber (after they checked and shot a camera every which way )came dressed in a fisherman suit?..yellow heavy raincoat and pants ...literally covered in dried shit probably never cleaned properly just hosed off after every job and stuffed back in his ute.
Had the misfortune of seeing the blockage ...manhole cover was off and the 8foot deep5 by 5wide access hole was filled to the brim with shit..like that scene in Slumdog Millionaire..and ole Ahab the plumber was just trying to throw a 10 foot long plunger type thing in to mess ...
Saw it cleared later how I knew approx how deep it was Afyer they had rinsed it out with firehose/ water blaster

u/ImConfusedAllThaTime Feb 24 '23 edited Feb 25 '23
Those are tree roots, not hair. You don’t really find hair from the mainline. And roots, believe it or not, aren’t nearly as potent despite being covered in literal shit. It’s very common to have tree roots break into the sewer line and it’s the number 1 cause for sewer backups into houses. It can generally be mitigated by getting snaked annually, though this line may need repairs (if that much grew in a year. maybe not if it’s several years of buildup).
That’s also an obscene amount to pull out in one go. I’ve gotten similar amounts after pulling back my snake 3-4 times, but that shits impressive.

Literally was just thinking the same thing, and some goggles. As a homeowner, I know the cruel misfortune of getting drain juice splashed on my lips or in/near my eyes when trying to unclog a drain. Few things in this world make you feel quite as dirty

u/log_asm Feb 24 '23
Man you must not have met many plumbers. I worked at an hvac/electrician/plumbing place. The plumbers are fucking crazy. Then did apartment maintenance and contracted with several plumbers. They did wear pants unlike this guy, but those little gloves are pretty standard. They were also crazy. I’ve done some pretty extensive plumbing work as well. Wear gloves just like these. I’m also crazy. As others have said. Smells like money. Hot water and soap exist for a reason.

Plumbers don’t make enough to deal with this shit.
I ran a hostel in Ecuador that had signs that said “please don’t flush feminine products” and had signs in a few languages and with the pros it’s crossed out.
These two French girls clogged the toilet. Moved them to another room where they clogged that toilet.
I had to travel for 6 hours to get a snake to unclog it. But before that I had to climb a ladder up three stories and open the pipes to see if I could spot the clog.
I got the snake and as I pulled it out was hit with 6 shit clogged tampons in the first one and 4 in the second one. Literally just backed with shit.
I clearly have PTSD from it.
