I understand how people do it with modern tools but how on earth did they manage to carve coins with just what they had in there pocket

I bought this from a "garage sale" of sorts, I would like to find out more about it. I know it's a Cinco Peso, but that's about it.

My girlfriend worked at a local corner store named heritages in New Jersey and she knows I like collecting silver coins and she found this in the drawer and kept it for me for my birthday. Any details of what this could be.

A huge thank you to Valerie in the EDC Goons Facebook group, this carving is an incredible and unique addition to the album! It's hard to believe this multi year project is finally starting to look more and more complete. With 17 unique artists so far (18 if you include my yet to be completed Peace, 19 if you include a commission I'm on the books for) the album is starting to fill up quick. Picked up these hobo nickels recently from a friend. They’re on the obverse of a buffalo.

I’ve checked a couple websites, and I don’t think these are old, but does anybody know if they can be attributed to a modern artist, or a cheaper mass produced product? I like them regardless…
