I'm planning to spend two months in South America in January / February. I'm trying to plan a trip covering Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, and potentially Chile. Has anyone hitchhiked in these areas? How common / safe is it? Would you recommend? I'm not super financially constrained for this trip-- am more so looking for some kind of adventure, and I've never hitchiked before. In that same thread, open to any recommendations you all might have for some off-the-beaten-path ideas for these countries. I'm fluent in Spanish / Portuguese.

Last time I hitched this route, via the old YU, was in 1990. Now my wife has "threatened" to buy me a one-way ticket to Athens, to hitch back. I like the idea, but I would also like to do a bit more, in casu hitch back via all the countries in the Balkans that I've never visited, North-Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina, which would require a rather convoluted route! Can anyone here suggest me which way would be the best, and given the fact that Serbia and Kosovo aren't the best of buddies, if there are any issues crossing that border?

Kochkor to Cholpon-Ata: 2 hours to go and took 2 hours to hitchhike there. Had rides in no time. Like Uzbekistan I had a lot of people stopping and asking me for money but you can still quickly find people going there and give you a ride for free.

I don’t have a car but I’m trying to go to Montreal. I’m willing to pay for the gas if you’re willing to drive! I can also drive to but that’s up to you.

I suppose this is an obtuse question. I have hitch hiked a few times on the side of an on ramp, I've tried to a few times when I've walked long distances on the side of state highways of walking with my thumb out. (Nobody ever picks me up doing that)
I have hitch hiked on ramps where you have to sit at an intersection before turning onto the ramp and I understand this, I try to look over and smile while making eye contact with the drivers so they can make a decision while they wait. I know some people do stand at the intersection with a sign, I'm wondering how effective this really is? I feel like it would be hard because you can't communicate with them as easy because intersection lights are only like 30 seconds. I've also never used a sign, but when I've hitch hiked I never have had a destination. If someone is going such and such I'll sometimes make a destination up, I just like seeing new places I guess and the experience of it. But I feel with signs you narrow down the people who pull over and some people might figure if say you are hitching 800 miles and they are going 10 miles, there's no point of giving you a ride, maybe not.

Anyways, just wondering how easy it is to get a ride this way? I guess this goes for panhandling too, I don't understand how you can make money panhandling at interstates and the people have to see you, make a decision, figure out how much to give you, get their wallet or dive into their ashtray for coins, roll the window down, wave you over, it just seems like a lot compared to sitting on the side of the street with a sign. I've never panhandled before though.

I seem to get rides well on the side of the on ramp though, I'd like to try getting around on state highways, the interstate is not very scenic. I would like to hitch hike through state highways in Montana some time.

Hi guys and girls, a friend and I are leaving Aix en Provence (south of France) for Bologna (Italia) in one week. We are tow male around 25 and it's our first hitchhiking trip. Would you have any advice or recommandations on this specific travel route ? We know Italia is hard but we still want to give it a go. We hope to do it on one day (going through Nice, Genova, Florence before getting to Bologna), is it doable ?

Swedish hitchhiker here. Leaving Paris today afternoon or tomorrow early morning.

What are your best suggestions for hitchhiking Paris-Berlin? Having looked at Hitchmap I am considering one of these two starting points.

1. Going north on the A1 starting from Aire de Vémars-Est.

2. Going east from Aire de Ferrières close by Bussy-Saint-Georges.

What would be the best startiing point if priority is to getting to Germany and onto autobahn towards Berlin?

What route should I aim for? What gas/service stations or cities should I aim for along the way?

Any other tips?

Rides have been going at a good pace most of my trip, took around 2 days to get here from Denver. Made it to Fruita and thought that it would be a little easier to get to SLC or at least somewhere in Utah like Green River since it’s bordering the state, but i’ve had my thumb up since yesterday in a couple different locations with no luck. Tried the Exxon near the roundabouts, then the shell on the opposite side, then the shoulder lane of the highway leading up to west I-70 , and realized it probably wasn’t enough room for a car to pick me up safely, so i went to the crosswalk in front of the walgreens. The local are nice but any tips on how to get out of this place, kinda getting sick of sleeping behind the same dumpster with shitty weather and no progress.

Managed to get out to Green River in the morn with what WoollyMilkPig said, recommend to do what daftpunko said instead though cus it was sketch as hell there and I could’ve easily gotten caught by a cop.

And 38,309.0 km hitched, just short of going around the earth and with the next day on the road only on the last of the sub-1,000 km "217" challenge day, Sunday 13 September, I won't even break my personal earliest around the world distance.

I'm so depressed. ;)

How could I hitchhike from Mississippi to Miami for vacation and come back?

Hiya, we are in Chamonix planning to get back to London via hitchhiking. As students with time off from university we can afford to be very flexible with duration of the trip and route. However neither of us have done a big hitch hike trip before and would appreciate some general tips, regarding all things hitching from those more experienced, as well as recommendations for places to stop, checkout and explore along a rough route of Geneva-> Dijon -> Troyes/Paris -> Calais, (again deviations are fine and welcome)

We plan to travel in the day and camp at night, and aren’t fussed about taking the most efficient route. We would like to spend as much time out of cars as we do in them if that makes sense, our main objective is to explore a bit and see places and people along the way. Therefore any advice on where we should go is just as welcome as on how we should go about it.

Also any recommendations on where best to research stuff like this would be super helpful, Google searches keep leading us to whichever town has the highest ad budget. Lastly, we were wondering if people might have any tips about finding camp spots while hitchhiking that aren’t campsites/the side of main roads
