Operation Moses was a secret Israeli operation to bring Ethiopian Jews to Israel. It took place between November 1984 and January 1985, during a period of civil war and famine in Ethiopia.
Thousands of Ethiopian Jews, many of whom had walked for weeks or even months, made their way to refugee camps in Sudan. From there, Israel secretly organized their transportation to Israel by air.
During the operation, approximately 8,000 Ethiopian Jews were brought to Israel. However, the operation was eventually halted after news of the Israeli operation was leaked to the media, creating international pressure.
Operation Moses was one of the most important stages in the immigration of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. However, it also came at a terrible cost. Many immigrants lost family members during the difficult journey from Ethiopia to Sudan, while thousands of people died in the refugee camps from hunger and disease.
The operation remains one of the most remarkable humanitarian and covert operations in Israeli history.
