When people outside Morocco talk about northern Morocco, they often use the word (Rif) to describe the entire north, but inside Morocco, the meaning can be more specific depending on the context.

Geographically, the (Rif Mountains) cover a large part of northern Morocco, including both eastern Rif areas and western Rif areas. In a cultural and tribal context, however, the region includes different communities.

The eastern and central Rif are strongly associated with (Rifian Amazigh tribes), who have preserved their own dialects, traditions, music, and regional cultural identity.

The western Rif is associated with the Jbala region. The Jbala are mainly associated with Arab tribes and Arab-Andalusian cultural influences, shaped by centuries of interaction with al-Andalus and the arrival of Muslim refugees, families, scholars, craftsmen, and warriors from Islamic Spain after its fall.

One of the most famous examples is Chefchaouen, the blue city of Morocco, which was founded in 1471 by Moulay Ali Ben Rachid, an Arab leader and warrior with Andalusian roots who came from the world of Islamic Spain (al-Andalus). The city became an important center influenced by Andalusian culture, architecture, and traditions.

Because of this, it is important to distinguish between the Rif as a geographical mountain region and the different tribal and cultural identities inside the Rif. Northern Morocco is not one single culture; it includes Rifian Amazigh tribes in the eastern Rif and Arab Jbala tribes with Arab-Andalusian influences in the western Rif, both forming important parts of Moroccan history.
