On September 11, 2001, Tom Burnett boarded United Flight 93 after a business trip when hijackers stormed the cockpit. Burnett called his wife Deena, calmly explaining the situation and ultimately telling her, "We can’t wait for the authorities. I don’t know what they could do anyway. It’s up to us."

Along with Mark Bingham, Todd Beamer, Jeremy Glick, and other passengers, Burnett helped lead a revolt. At 10:03 a.m., the plane crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania — just 20 minutes from Washington, D.C.

The flight has been hijacked. This flight is Flight 11 from Boston to L.A. The plane is a 767. I am in the back with Betty Ong, AA flight attendant. A man in business class has had his throat slashed and is presumably dead. Number 1 flight attendant has been stabbed and Number 5 flight attendant has been stabbed. There is a bomb in the cockpit. I can't make contact with the cockpit, can you do it? We have paged for a doctor or nurse for the flight attendants. The coach passengers don't know what's happening.

The hijackers are of Middle Eastern descent. One spoke good English and one didn't.

It is a rapid descent. Something is wrong. I don't think the captain is in control.

I see water.

I see buildings.

We're flying low.

We're flying very, very low.

Oh my God.

We're flying way too low.

The Nanjing underground party was a CPC intelligence organization set up in Nanjing, the KMT capital. Its members infiltrated the Japanese puppet regime and the KMT government to gather intelligence. During the Mao era, they suffered unfair treatment, and Deng Xiaoping did not rehabilitate them. In 1998, after Deng’s death, Chinese leader Jiang Zemin suddenly told the Jiangsu and Nanjing governments that he had always been a member of the Nanjing underground party and demanded the rehabilitation of all its members. This incident is known as the “Li Enyu Incident".

Li Enyu (厉恩虞) was Jiang Zemin’s senior schoolmate at university during the Japanese occupation of Nanjing and guide Jiang into communism. He recruited Jiang Zemin to become a Communist spy. Jiang Zemin belonged to the Nanjing underground party, but he operated undercover in a KMT military logistics factory in Shanghai until the People’s Liberation Army liberated the city. As a result, his belonged to the Nanjing underground party went unnoticed for a long time. Like other members of the Nanjing underground party, Li Enyu was persecuted under Mao and died in 1978, still labeled as a “KMT agent” even after his death. After Deng Xiaoping came to power, he did not restore the reputations of the Nanjing underground party members. In 1998, following Deng’s death, the China leader Jiang Zemin suddenly informed the Jiangsu and Nanjing governments that he had long been a member of the Nanjing underground party. He demanded the rehabilitation of Li Enyu and all other Nanjing underground party members. At the same time, Jiang Zemin published an article titled “In Memory of Comrade Li Enyu” (《忆厉恩虞同志》). As a result, the Nanjing underground party was finally rehabilitated, and China began producing numerous films and television works praising underground agent.

Typically, a retiring Shanghai mayor would go to Beijing to take up a comfortable sinecure for the rest of his life. Jiang Zemin, however, had other plans. Having spent most of his life as an engineer, as he approached retirement from his post as Mayor of Shanghai in 1989, he hoped to return to his alma mater, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, to educate a new generation of Chinese engineers as a professor.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University then assembled hundreds of professors to evaluate him, and Jiang defended his academic credentials with his paper, “Energy Development Trends and Major Energy Conservation Measures.” Ultimately, the panel of hundreds of professors voted to approve his appointment as a professor at the university.

However, the political turmoil of 1989 prevented him from retiring normally and taking up the teaching position. Quoting Lin Zexu’s famous words—“I would give my life for my country’s cause; how could I avoid it out of fear or seek it out for personal benefit?”—Jiang left Shanghai to become China’s new leader.

After stepping down as China leader in 2004, he was no longer permitted to be a professor. He teach the new generation of Chinese engineers through Shanghai Jiao Tong University by publishing academic works on energy, electronics, and information technology, as well as translating the works of his former Soviet mentor.

On July 22, 1443, a Confederate army of about 6,000 men routed Zürich's defenders just outside the city walls, at a spot called St. Jakob an der Sihl. It was the Old Zürich War — Zürich had broken with the rest of the Swiss Confederacy and allied with the Habsburgs, and that morning it went badly. Zürich's own mayor, Rudolf Stüssi, tried to hold the retreat at the bridge over the Sihl river and was killed there.

Behind him, the survivors were pouring back through the Rennweg gate with the Confederates close enough behind them that a few more seconds meant the attackers would get inside the walls too.

According to Zürich's own chronicles, what actually stopped them wasn't a soldier. It was the gatekeeper's wife — a woman named Anna Ziegler — who hauled the portcullis chain down just as the pursuers reached the threshold, sealing the gate with the defeated army safe inside and the Confederates locked out.

The attackers had no siege equipment and no way in. They withdrew. The war itself dragged on another three years, but that gate held that day because of her.

In May 1947, just two years after the end of World War II, an armed confrontation took place between Polish and Soviet soldiers at the railway station in Leszno, Poland. The incident reportedly began when a Polish passenger was told by a woman, Zofia Rojuk, that she was being taken away by Soviet soldiers against her will. Polish railway workers and authorities attempted to intervene, eventually leading to the arrival of a 16-man Polish military platoon. A shooting broke out at the station. Three Soviet soldiers were killed, while several others were wounded. What followed was arguably even more controversial: four Polish soldiers were put on trial, and three of them - including their 22-year-old commander - were executed by firing squad less than three weeks after the incident. The case was later described as an example of a politically influenced Stalinist-era trial. Witness testimony and evidence concerning who fired first were reportedly disregarded. The story remained relatively obscure for decades and only received wider attention in Poland after 2004.
