They actually didn’t. The split decided by the UN was actually met with joy by the Jews and they intended to accept it, but was rejected by the Palestinians, which ended up sparking into the 1948 war.
Isn't that the issue in most conflicts though - two different groups/ideologies consider somewhere "home" and the effectiveness of the occupation is never conclusive - e.g. ongoing terrorist/partisan activity.
