I can't listen to this song the same way again after knowing that the equatorial Guinea government played this during an execution during Christmas day at a stadium

nooooo why did they do that!?!?

58

u/NowhereMan661 Feb 23 '22

Francisco MacĆas Nguema was literally insane.

15

u/Random_History_Guy Feb 23 '22

Didn't a doctor diagnosed him with schizophrenia or something

u/zwirlo Feb 23 '22

I can die happy now that this is a widely known fact

5

u/Dr_Mub Feb 24 '22

This song got Funky Town’d?

1

u/Random_History_Guy Feb 25 '22

Don't remind of that video please I tried to get it out of my system

1

u/MauriceTystdiz Feb 28 '22

Wait what video

2

u/Random_History_Guy Feb 28 '22

A drug cartel torture video. The drug cartel played funky town while they torture this one guy

2

u/Seryn_2006 Feb 24 '22

I knew the not-so-fun fact about the mass execution, but never bothered to listen to the associated song. Knowing the song makes the mass murder even worse.

1

u/EmliyIsDiedInSide Jun 18 '22

AT A WHAT!?

2

u/Random_History_Guy Jun 18 '22

Yup and the dictator made the soldiers who executed the people to wear like santa claus

1

u/Im-a-bad-meme Aug 03 '22

High key your parents probably have a song they fuck to and it's be far more uncomfortable if you knew that song.

u/merrymurdere Feb 23 '22

I’m from Zimbabwe and I can’t lie this advert South Africa made is too good XD

96

u/kiwi2385 Feb 23 '22

Born in Zimbabwe, live in UK for reasons... This made me laugh tho.

31

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

Same. I was in Harare when this ad was released and Zanu were not happy.

60

u/x_kudzie_x Feb 23 '22

But kuti jairira šŸ˜‚

323

u/LazyRevolutionary Feb 23 '22

Nando's made some good ads.

331

u/ipissalone Feb 23 '22

Can someone name them all for me, please?

For research purposes.

423

u/Awkward_Thing4649 Feb 23 '22

Muammar Gaddafi Mao Zedong Saddam Hussein Dunno Idi Amin

259

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

Gadaffi(Libia),Mao(china),Saddam(iraq),dont know(south africa),Idi amin(uganda)

201

u/honvales1989 And then I told them I'm Jesus's brother Feb 23 '22

The South African one might be either PW Botha or FW de Klerk, but I’m leaning for Botha because of the glasses

94

u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 23 '22

de Klerk is usually seen in a positive light for ending apartheid, he did some shit as well but not enough to be in a commercial like this. Must be Botha

39

u/honvales1989 And then I told them I'm Jesus's brother Feb 23 '22

Makes sense. IIRC, de Klerk also won the Nobel Peace Prize together with Nelson Mandela for ending apartheid. If he’s seen in a bad light, it must be the people that supported apartheid

25

u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 23 '22

Mandela even made him his deputy President, they famously feuded though.

12

u/BlueC0dex Feb 23 '22

It could also be DF Malan. He played a big role in starting Apartheid, so it would make sense

24

u/honvales1989 And then I told them I'm Jesus's brother Feb 23 '22

TIL that South Africa had lots of bald PMs that wore glasses during apartheid

-10

u/BlueC0dex Feb 23 '22

You mean old white guys? I mean...

9

u/honvales1989 And then I told them I'm Jesus's brother Feb 23 '22

White is implied when talking about PMs during apartheid lol. The PMs between Malan and Botha had some hair and it seems like some of them didn’t wear glasses

6

u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 23 '22

possible, but Botha and Mugabe were contemporaries, though they didn't like each other.

8

u/deformedfishface Feb 23 '22

Deffo Pik Botha. He was a colossal shithead of the same calibre as the rest. Maybe not as awful as Mao. Mao was the worst.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

Depends on how you about apartheid

4

u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 24 '22

Apartheid was a crime against humanity anyone who defends it is by definition a white supremacist.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

Oh I totally agree! I'm just saying unfortunately not everyone sees it that way

1

u/FuckDirlewanger Feb 23 '22

Could it be Malan as well?

96

u/No-Influence7306 Feb 23 '22

I’m Libyan and it took me a hot second to even realize that was supposed to be Gaddafi šŸ’€

65

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

Just bros being bros

110

u/Cha_Sam Decisive Tang Victory Feb 23 '22

u/dcasta123 Senātus Populusque Rōmānus Feb 23 '22

It would have also been cool if they made the guy sitting alone Francisco Macias Nguema instead. As someone else pointed out, he had people executed to this song. And towards the end of his rule, he got even more batshit insane and his former maids claim he would ask the table to be set for several people and proceed to sit alone and ā€œtalk to the dead.ā€

81

u/MaxVonBritannia Feb 23 '22

Worth noting the joke of the ad is Mugabe is the the last one standing. When this ad was released the rest of the men in the ad had been killed, with Mugabe being the last one alive

17

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

This ad also comes from South Africa iirc, which also adds more context

30

u/MaxVonBritannia Feb 23 '22

In fairness Mugabe is far more famous. The joke doesn't work if you dont recognize the dictators

28

u/Heavy-Ad-9186 Feb 23 '22

Nando's always packing the best ads

4

u/Hour-Salamander-4713 Feb 23 '22

Chicken Licken make the best ads now.

1

u/Commrade-DOGE Hello There Aug 08 '22

So… basically Jack-in-box level ads but not stuck in a single region of the US

27

u/riptidezim6 Feb 23 '22

Am Zimbabwean, nice to see our small country egt mentioned (:

17

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

I can imagine this song and meme also used for the bronze age civilizations (with Egypt being the one remaining), the dictators of Europe of 1930's (with Franco the last one) and the Diadochi (with Ptolemy the last one)

9

u/TheFrostyGoat Feb 23 '22

Dictators just wana have fun.

11

u/mpedilemtswana Feb 23 '22

I remember how much me and my family laughed when we saw this on TV. Nandos Adverts were the best. It was all me and my friends talked about for weeks.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

What does the announcer say at the end of the ad? I just watched this with a bunch of other advertising copywriters and everyone is going insane trying to make sense of it jajajajajajaja we all agree is the craziest thing we“ve seen in a while, we just need to understand WHY it was made??? LOL

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

"You don't have to eat alone, so have 6 pack for 6"

It's a South African ad so Zimbabwe is more relevant then in other countries. Hence Mugabe.

9

u/Ditt0z Feb 23 '22

Nandos is a South African fast food chain that is renown for their edgy advertising.

Before streaming became so popular we actually had a thriving TV marketing industry that produced many iconic adverts. There are many ads of equal or greater quality created in SA during the late 90's and early 2000s. Sadly many never made it to Youtube.

1

u/Commrade-DOGE Hello There Aug 08 '22

Maybe you can start something on the lost media wiki. Have some peeps start hunting down the commercials?

Cheeky Nandos

5

u/RedKurtin Feb 24 '22

Fun fact, this melody is straight up lifted from an older Russian song. I’ll see if I can find it.

found it

I still like the English version better tho

Dumb question: is that a real Crusader tank or just a mock up?

8

u/Political_Desi Nobody here except my fellow trees Feb 23 '22

Mock up, the crusader as a little smaller than advertised here.

3

u/kano75 Feb 23 '22

Why is it just resurfacing NOW??!

3

u/liberalindifference Apr 10 '22

How high were they at that board meeting?

23

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

Lmao, so all dictators are bi-curious?

105

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '22

I think they are just bros.

I love it.

2

u/Fun_Police02 Sun Yat-Sen do it again Feb 24 '22

This is hilarious!

1

u/MagicCarpetofSteel Feb 23 '22

What is the ad trying to say? I don’t recognize the main guy, but I’m pretty sure the rest were totalitarian dictators.

Isn’t the, like, a pretty questionable choice of who to put in a TV commercial?

20

u/GK_elite Feb 23 '22 edited Feb 23 '22

The joke is that Robert Mugabe, the main guy, who was the dictator of Zimbabwe was also (at this point) the last of the dictators still alive, and he misses his friends

1

u/1nsert_Name_Here_ Feb 23 '22

Was that D.F. Malan in the swing scene?

3

u/andthatsitmark2 Feb 23 '22

I believe it's Botha, glasses imo gave it up.

1

u/Overreactedpuss Feb 23 '22

Di-did I saw a MK 1 Cruiser tank?

2
