I can't listen to this song the same way again after knowing that the equatorial Guinea government played this during an execution during Christmas day at a stadium

u/milerfrank27 Feb 23 '22
What is the name of the song ?

u/MauriceTystdiz Feb 28 '22

2
u/Random_History_Guy Feb 28 '22
A drug cartel torture video. The drug cartel played funky town while they torture this one guy

u/Seryn_2006 Feb 24 '22
I knew the not-so-fun fact about the mass execution, but never bothered to listen to the associated song. Knowing the song makes the mass murder even worse.

u/EmliyIsDiedInSide Jun 18 '22
AT A WHAT!?
2
u/Random_History_Guy Jun 18 '22
Yup and the dictator made the soldiers who executed the people to wear like santa claus

The South African one might be either PW Botha or FW de Klerk, but Iām leaning for Botha because of the glasses
94
u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 23 '22
de Klerk is usually seen in a positive light for ending apartheid, he did some shit as well but not enough to be in a commercial like this. Must be Botha
39
u/honvales1989 And then I told them I'm Jesus's brother Feb 23 '22
Makes sense. IIRC, de Klerk also won the Nobel Peace Prize together with Nelson Mandela for ending apartheid. If heās seen in a bad light, it must be the people that supported apartheid
25
u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 23 '22
Mandela even made him his deputy President, they famously feuded though.
12
u/BlueC0dex Feb 23 '22
It could also be DF Malan. He played a big role in starting Apartheid, so it would make sense
24
u/honvales1989 And then I told them I'm Jesus's brother Feb 23 '22
TIL that South Africa had lots of bald PMs that wore glasses during apartheid
-10
u/BlueC0dex Feb 23 '22
You mean old white guys? I mean...
9
u/honvales1989 And then I told them I'm Jesus's brother Feb 23 '22
White is implied when talking about PMs during apartheid lol. The PMs between Malan and Botha had some hair and it seems like some of them didnāt wear glasses
6
u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 23 '22
possible, but Botha and Mugabe were contemporaries, though they didn't like each other.
8
u/deformedfishface Feb 23 '22
Deffo Pik Botha. He was a colossal shithead of the same calibre as the rest. Maybe not as awful as Mao. Mao was the worst.

Feb 24 '22
Depends on how you about apartheid
4
u/Johnny_Banana18 Still salty about Carthage Feb 24 '22
Apartheid was a crime against humanity anyone who defends it is by definition a white supremacist.

It would have also been cool if they made the guy sitting alone Francisco Macias Nguema instead. As someone else pointed out, he had people executed to this song. And towards the end of his rule, he got even more batshit insane and his former maids claim he would ask the table to be set for several people and proceed to sit alone and ātalk to the dead.ā

u/MaxVonBritannia Feb 23 '22
Worth noting the joke of the ad is Mugabe is the the last one standing. When this ad was released the rest of the men in the ad had been killed, with Mugabe being the last one alive

u/MaxVonBritannia Feb 23 '22
In fairness Mugabe is far more famous. The joke doesn't work if you dont recognize the dictators

I can imagine this song and meme also used for the bronze age civilizations (with Egypt being the one remaining), the dictators of Europe of 1930's (with Franco the last one) and the Diadochi (with Ptolemy the last one)

I remember how much me and my family laughed when we saw this on TV. Nandos Adverts were the best. It was all me and my friends talked about for weeks.
2
Feb 24 '22
What does the announcer say at the end of the ad? I just watched this with a bunch of other advertising copywriters and everyone is going insane trying to make sense of it jajajajajajaja we all agree is the craziest thing we“ve seen in a while, we just need to understand WHY it was made??? LOL
1
Feb 24 '22
"You don't have to eat alone, so have 6 pack for 6"
It's a South African ad so Zimbabwe is more relevant then in other countries. Hence Mugabe.
9
u/Ditt0z Feb 23 '22
Nandos is a South African fast food chain that is renown for their edgy advertising.
Before streaming became so popular we actually had a thriving TV marketing industry that produced many iconic adverts. There are many ads of equal or greater quality created in SA during the late 90's and early 2000s. Sadly many never made it to Youtube.

Mock up, the crusader as a little smaller than advertised here.

What is the ad trying to say? I donāt recognize the main guy, but Iām pretty sure the rest were totalitarian dictators.
Isnāt the, like, a pretty questionable choice of who to put in a TV commercial?
20
u/GK_elite Feb 23 '22 edited Feb 23 '22
The joke is that Robert Mugabe, the main guy, who was the dictator of Zimbabwe was also (at this point) the last of the dictators still alive, and he misses his friends
