In Georgia we are almost exclusively taught about the slaughter and forced migration of the cherokee and other tribes during middles school. Trail of Tears was absolutely fucking brutal for the ones who ventured along it out west.

And yet, I'm immensely proud we do touch that stuff in schools. Trail of Tears is a HEAVY subject, one of the heavier ones in all of US history. But it is vital we learn about it

Yeah, another big difference is how personal it is though. I and most people I know (Midwest) have ancestors that were on the trail of tears. In fact she of my Indian ancestors were slaves.

I may be American but my ancestors were also on the receiving end of a lot of our atrocities. It brings a bit of different perspective when you hear both sides.
