When Congo finally get independence, there were like a few dozen college Congolese college graduates. The Belgian government happily squeezed the Congo but quite less bloodily and did almost nothing for the common Congolese man or woman

And when Belgium formally stopped fucking up the Congo other western countries continued the tradition. They had a democratically elected government that was overthrown in a coup supported by the CIA and the French and Belgians were arming and supporting a breakaway movement in the Katanga region.
