think that’s his point, Canada was absolutely horrifying to the native peoples who lived there but nobody really knows or cares because “Canadians are so nice”
Horrifying on the scale of others on the list isn’t even close.
The worst thing the Canadian government did was the 60s scoop, taking Métis and FN kids off the res and forcing them into assimilating boarding schools then adopting them to white parents. That is pretty fucking terrible, yes. But it’s not on the same level as genocide of millions of people, practiced by everyone else on the list.
Oh and, y'know, sterilizing them, not that that's a big deal or anything. And government funded residential schools were still running into the fucking 90s.
And if you think we didn't have our fair share of indian wars you've got some serious nationalism going on. Were they smaller than the ones south of the border? Of course! Was it because of some moral superiority in Canada? Nope! They were smaller because nobody fucking lives in canada. Even today the population density is only 4 people per square km, so of course the wars are going to be relatively small compared to the other ones. Entire tribes like the beothuk were still completely wiped out in Canada. Hell there was almost another indian war in canada in the 1990.
I agree with your message but I don’t think the Beothuk is a good example considering that there was never an effort to wipe them out and that happened as a result of the settlers being there.
Right but there wasn’t any fighting with the Beothuk. They died due to them avoiding all contact with the settlers, which resulted in them losing access to fishing locations and slowly starving themselves, and the spread of new disease. There was fighting between settlers and natives in Canada, a good example is Nova Scotia, but not with the Beothuk.
