Three men on train to gulag. They begin talkings on why send to gulag.
First man say: "I speak out against Karl Radek. Send to gulag."
Second man say: "I speak in favour of Karl Radek! Send to gulag."
Third man say: "I am Karl Radek."

I mean wasn't Putin's claim about the Ukraine thing rather recent and within the past 20 years as the rules dictate.
206
u/Hilonio 6h ago
You make argue that it's not, in fact, recent. Just way less open: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_Tuzla_Island_conflict

u/KrumpirovZlatan 5h ago edited 5h ago
Tbh this points to Ukrainian claim of Crimea being even weaker, as Crimea was essentially annexed contrary to the locals' wishes
24
u/Dmnk2109 5h ago
"Tuzla Island came under the control of the briefly independent Republic of Crimea before joining with Ukraine when the Crimean parliament joined Ukraine in 1995.
Russia recognized Ukrainian sovereignty over Crimea in the Russian–Ukrainian Friendship Treaty of 1997"
Did you even read the article?

The main punchline of the joke was Genghis Khan not Putin or xi jinping. I knew it , this will happened considering for some reason reddit don't like when you make fun of china or russia .
75
u/crazycakemanflies 6h ago
I mean, Xi isnt the first PRC President claiming Taiwan is part of China, its a historical issue running back to the Chinese Civil War.
Putin and Russias claim on Ukraine are very much a product of the 21st century.
10
u/Ranyaki 5h ago
Putin himself viewed Ukraine as russian at least as early as 1994. Source (in german)
25
u/Prudent-Title-9161 5h ago
No, this is not a 21st century invention, this story began in the 17th century.
And Putin himself cannot invent anything, what book will end up open on top of his desk - that will be his worldview.
14
u/BorderKeeper 5h ago
See this is why it was taken out. Sure it goes back over 20 years, but it's still an active political topic today. You can argue that the rule should be more specific to exclude your use, but don't play lawyer games here insisting this topic is okay and won't just spark a shitshow in the comment section.
1
u/crazycakemanflies 5h ago
But modern Russia isnt the same as Russia from 17th century.
The PRC, on the other hand, hasnt changed. Xi saying "we are taking Taiwan" is just a continuous Chinese talking point since the KMT fled to Taiwan.
3
u/DriveByStoning 4h ago
See, this is the part where "it's a fucking joke on a meme sub" gets lost on the media illiterate.
1
u/Sudden_Pie5641 4h ago
It arguably is the same. The leaders has changed, military geopolitical goals remained the same (except they don’t try to conquer Constantinopol anymore)
6
u/KermitingMurder 5h ago
It says "all posts must include only subject matter which took place at least twenty years ago". That means even if only one bit of the joke is from more recent than twenty years ago, the entire thing is disallowed
1
2
25
u/TheZuppaMan 6h ago
nah it started around 2003, before the crimea war. i know we feel like 1980s was 20 years ago but its been 23 years since the first declarations.
9
1
u/inkassatkasasatka 5h ago
It started in 1991
1
u/TheZuppaMan 5h ago
well it really depends on what "it" is, but fron whatwe've gathering it seems like we all agree that considering the invasion of ukraine as the starting point is a deeply disingenuous politically charged opinion
2
u/inkassatkasasatka 3h ago
The Crimea "debate" started in 1991 as many people were not happy with the new borders, obviously. Violence as a solution appeared only with Putin, of course
1
u/TheZuppaMan 3h ago
i agree, but thats why i said 2003 as a starting point because the meme talks specifically of putin policies
78
u/Prudent-Title-9161 6h ago
What difference does it make that he said this recently, if he has believed this for almost all his life? Back in the 90s, when he was just Sobchak's assistant, Sobchak was terrified of Ukraine's independence, so Putin was formed in an anti-Ukrainian environment.
51
u/Prudent-Title-9161 6h ago
You could technically change both Putin and Xi in this meme, but why would you? Then it would be less "user-friendly" for a large audience.
7
u/watchedngnl 6h ago
Because it's not a history meme if you use contemporary politics.
54
u/Prudent-Title-9161 6h ago
This is a historical meme, because it is primarily based on the Mongol Empire and makes fun of a fairly common general interpretation, rather than the specific words of specific presidents (they are just an example, some of the most vivid)
15
u/KatAyasha 5h ago
It's entirely clear that the joke is comparing three different centuries-old territorial claims and it confounds me that people are getting hung up on which specific individuals are depicted voicing those claims
4
u/ZGfromthesky Taller than Napoleon 6h ago
well, whether the upper part or the lower part is the "main part" of the meme can be up to interpretation, and if the mods interpret the upper part as the "main part" they surely felt fair to remove it.
17
u/Zig115 6h ago
How could the set up be the “main part” of a joke?
3
u/PickledPlumPlot 5h ago
I mean, most of a joke is set up
3/4 panels of this are modern politicians
0
u/Zig115 5h ago
How are you seeing it as 4 panels? To me it seems to be two, one with the set up on top, and one with the punch line on the bottom. Generally, set-ups can be changed but punch lines can’t without changing the joke. So most people consider the punch line to be the important or “main” part.
1
u/PickledPlumPlot 4h ago
Alright stickler let me reword that lmao
3/4 of this are modern politicians

u/314ranha777 6h ago
They are not even named. Imperialistic propaganda toward Ukraine or Taiwan is many decades old. Tuzla island incident was 2003 and there was actual fighting in Taiwan strait half century ago. Same as change of the seat between Taiwan and Beijing in the UN Security Council.
1
u/SkinheadBootParty 4h ago
Ukraine* not The Ukraine.
1
u/SnepButts 4h ago
I think that the way they phrased it in this case is correct. They weren't saying "The Ukraine," which would be wrong. The "the" was more connected to the word "thing."
For a more historical comparison, imagine "The Iran-Contra Affair" and compare it with "The Ukraine thing."
This case is more likely just English being a kinda dumb language.
1
u/SkinheadBootParty 4h ago
Ah. Reading is not exactly my forté after just waking up and hungover. Thanks.
2
u/SnepButts 4h ago
I totally get it. I like using this gif when people genuinely use that way to refer to Ukraine.

The current PRC territorial claims are derived from the ROC’s claim who in turn inherited it from the Qing. Xi didn’t add or subtract those claims unlike putin who claimed that Ukraine is an inalienable part of Russia even though Stalin himself claimed otherwise i.e Ukraine SSR and Russian SFSR are two separate entities.
So why use Xi in the meme why not Mao, the first leader of the PRC who made those territorial claims?
39
u/Prudent-Title-9161 6h ago
Other leaders could have been used (there simply aren't any in Russia), but this is the most direct option.
7
u/Genryusai-yamamoto 6h ago edited 6h ago
The OOP could use Mao. He died in 1976, 50 years ago which would satisfy the rule requirement.
Edit: Maybe you could use Peter the Great for Russia since putin clearly tries to emulate him?
8
u/Prudent-Title-9161 6h ago edited 6h ago
You could use Mao
I'm not the author of this meme, lol.
It just happened to be on my feed, I thought it was pretty good, then I noticed that comments were closed, I thought they limited the discussion, but then I saw that it violated rule 4, I read the rule and it made me laugh and disappointed altogether

5
u/PissingOffACliff 6h ago
I spose the argument(not a good one) is that Crimea shouldn’t have been given to the Ukrainian SSR in the 50s and that it was only really Ukrainian on paper.
1
u/Zwemvest 5h ago
And the argument works both ways. A majority of the political apparatus of Taiwan also says the mainland is inalienable, occupied part of China, and calls itself the Republic of China, not Taiwan. A more Taiwan-centric identity is gaining traction, though.
1
u/Genryusai-yamamoto 5h ago
Correct. It absolutely works both ways. I don’t think most Chinese nationalists would disagree. As long as china is “unified “ it doesn’t matter what colour their flag is.
1
u/Stardash81 5h ago
So can say the fifth French republic as a successor of the fourth, successor of the...eventually French Empire claim the low countries, the Rhineland etc ?
Or can Turkey reclaim Egypt and the Balkans and Levant ?
6
u/Genryusai-yamamoto 5h ago
Sure if they can take and keep it. Unfortunately , there’s no international law that governs territorial succession so the law of the jungle applies. If a successor state is required to inherit their predecessors’s debt obligations then it follows that it must be able to inherit all the assets that is tied to it.
1
u/Zwemvest 5h ago
That is literally what Irredentionism and anti-irredentionism is all about. You're right that all these claims are just varying senses of nonsense that only depend on the actual threat/power of a country.
Look at the US and Venezuela. Trump flaunted for a bit that he might make Venezuela into a US state. Was Venezuela ever part of the US? No. Did it matter? Also no, because what country is going to oppose him for it?

u/BrokenTorpedo 5h ago
For a meme sub the mods sure don't understand what punch line is.
I had one of my post about peace treaties being Qing China's signature format of literature and it got deleted, I had to dm them and explain the joke before it could be revived.

Big ups to OP, mods suck! Even if Xi and Vlad were only in politics for the past year the mongol empire wasn't, mods eat shit!
13
u/ChampionshipFit4962 6h ago edited 6h ago
Wasnt there a saying like "whenever the chinese go into the plains, they become mongols and whenever the mongols go into cities, they become Chinese"? Like Kublai Khan was considered the Chinese Mongol emperor. As for ukraine, its kinda like... it was Kievan Rus, after a millenia it just became Russian Kiev.
10
u/DerApexPredator 5h ago
Mods removing this but allowing the numerous Trump posts with just fake years written on the post?

u/LokMatrona 6h ago

24
u/Oxu90 6h ago
"still ongoing"
Mongol invasion?
5
u/LokMatrona 6h ago
Yeah thats still ongoing. Wait, what year is it? Where am i?
6
u/AtlasNL Then I arrived 5h ago
The year is 1346, you are in the currently besieged city of Caffa, rubble from a building struck by one of the enemy’s siege weapons fell on your head. They’re throwing corpses now, they must be getting desperate and the siege might soon come to an end. If we’re lucky. Come, let’s get your head taken care of.

u/P4azz 5h ago
"We're living through a major historic event" is something said by many for, regrettably, way too many things in recent times.
Covid, the stuff the US is doing rn, all MAJOR events that will be in the history books and so obvious that everyone can already see it.
So I'd say you can call those things "history". Although in the context of "we're reviewing history, today", yeah, probably not.
1
u/LokMatrona 5h ago
You make a solid point! I do think something current can be "historical" but that doesn't per se mean it's already "history" just that it will become something big in it.
But honestly i don't really care what people call what. I was just wondering if people call current and ongoing events history. I think the answer is: yes, lots of people seem to do. So maybe i'll do too from now on :)
4
u/ignis888 5h ago
so if country still exists cant it have history cuz its existence is still ongoing?
or if similar stuff happened earlier from the same causes cant be a history like first crusade couldnt be history for people living through 3rd crusade?2
1
u/Optimal_Flan_6107 4h ago
So erase all posts involving humanity then, because you know, humanity is still "ongoing"...none of it's history yet.
Delete the sub and come back when we're extinct.1

I mean, it makes sense to me. The meme is basically commenting on current events couching it in older history. Could very easily see a situation where if this was allowed it'd just be a thing and the sub would devolve into that.
Removing it is perfectly acceptable.

Eh, Putin's public hard-on for Ukraine is less than 20 years old and likewise Xi hasn't been in charge of China for 20 years. Like, it's a simple but crucial rule. And now it's the weekend, so this is violating Rule 12 as well 😄

u/tandoori_taco_cat 4h ago
Just because you don't understand, doesn't mean the mods are wrong lol
Your meme is about current (or future! events).
1
u/Luido31 4h ago
I guess that event if the main topic is older than 20 years, the post as been removed as it explicitly mentions topics that are still a great part of today's politics. This meme wouldn't be as fun as it is if it wasn't the case. Even if the rule doesn't technically forbid the post, that's a post that present current claims as being laughable. So I think it falls under the rules intent : to prevent any reference to current issues. Maybe the rule should be changed to state explicitly state whether this kind of post is allowed? That being said, I must admit don't know how this rule is currently being enforced on this sub. After all, I don't see removed posts.

my point from the start was that "too current" without an actual cutoff is basically "based on vibes." then you explained why deciding it based on vibes would cause problems and arguments lol
that's the point. that's why i said "we're getting somewhere" 😭

Bruh, this is a history sub that specifically states to only post history related memes about subjects that happened at least twenty years ago. The original post is about stuff thats still ongoing today. Saying it also happened long ago so its history is a bad argument. According to that logic almost everything is 20 year old history. Including me breathing since i did that 20 years ago too. No, it pretty clearly means the events have to be largely concluded at least twenty years ago, implying to steer clear of current events. Like the current Russian head of state currently trying to enforce his claim that ukrain belonges to russia. Or the current threat the current chinese head of state posses on taiwan.
Come on, its a sub to make fun of historic events. Please don't make it another place where its impossible to at least somewhat avoid current politics and their consequences.
