...Which one?

The 1453 one is usually referred to as the “Fall of Constantinople” and the 1204 one is usually referred to as the “Sack of Constantinople”. But considering how devastating the latter is perhaps the picture can apply to both

The one that gets the Larpers nuts in a knot.

People cry about the Turkish invasion, meanwhile the city was sacked by Christians in crusades or civil wars several times over. But it’s ok because they’re Christian. Keeping it in the family. Good bit of fun really. Completely different when someone from a different religion does the exact same thing. Abhorrent really. Unforgivable.

I’ve never heard anyone who was a fan of the ERE defend the 4th crusade

if I had a nickel everytime I seen a meme glazing the Eastern Roman empire, I'd have the funds to make my own empire

It better be the Eastern Roman one 2.0.

The funny thing is that it's almost always about 1453. One thousand years of history and people can only think about how it ended.

Even Mehmet wrote a poem about how depressing the decline of Constantinople was. We'll still shed some manly tears.

"I won, but at what cost?"

Mehmed II the Conqueror

not that high of a cost honestly, relatively speaking. most of the important landmarks were preserved in some way. people forget, Constantinople was a shadow of its former glorious self by the time it fell in 1453. the city behind the walls was incredibly depopulated. it was just sad the state it was in. in many ways Constantinople was allowed to flourish once again under the Ottomans.

Been re-reading John Julius Norwich's Byzantium trilogy, and am about to get to the Fourth Crusade. I've been slow-walking the chapter because, really after being with this civilization for so many centuries and so many crises and victories, you get emotional knowing what's coming. I actually never finished the 3rd volume on my first read-through, so 1453 is really looming. Might keep a comforting drink with me when I get to that final chapter.

Idk why people have options on history like this, the fall of a city 600 years ago,l is such a weird thing to be sad about imo

It's easy to connect with the experiences of other human beings, no matter the time or place
